Mission Statement

New Haven Reads, founded to “share the joy and power of reading,” increases the literacy skills of children to empower their academic success by providing individually tailored one-on-one after-school tutoring, educational family support, and a community book bank, all at no cost to participants.

About This Cause

New Haven Reads serves over 500 students in pre-kindergarten to twelfth grade by providing highly-structured, research-based literacy programs. We have four locations in New Haven, CT and are open six days a week. All of our programs are free of charge. Our students come from the Greater New Haven area and the vast majority come from low income families. All of the students in our programs are below-grade-level readers. Our largest program is a one-on-one tutoring program where the student is matched up with a trained volunteer tutor. The tutoring pair works together weekly across the school year on the child's literacy needs. The program is individualized and our staff supports parents as they advocate for their children in schools. In this way, we have a unified plan to support the student's learning goals. We also offer a community book bank which distributes over 135,000 books annually. Approximately 100 school field trips attend the Book Bank and we are open six days a week. Four our youngest students who are at risk for school failure, we provide a pre-k and kindergarten program where small groups (2-5 students) attend for an hour twice weekly and are taught by credentialed teachers. They follow a set curriculum that is rich in phonics and the building blocks of reading. There is considerable need for our programs with only 29% of New Haven students reading at or above grade level (2016 SBAC). Adult illiteracy is high also in our community. Our local area has approximately one third of children living in poverty and dealing with other challenges such as food and housing insecurity, English as a second language, and single parent households. Our student population typically reflects this. Our programs are very successful with 99% of our students tested in 2015-16 improving their literacy scores. 66% of the students increased their independent reading level and showed an average of more than a grade level of improvement. We have a waiting list that hovers between 60 and 100 students - purely based on word of mouth. We are proud to serve our community and together we are building a city of readers, one child at a time.
