Mission Statement

The Center for Political Ecology is an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit based in Santa Cruz, California. Our political ecology work generates public education materials, events, exhibits, and actions that demonstrate the power of credible and independent science, including citizen science, as a means to achieve biocultural sustainability. In our Local Ecologies initiatives we support and serve as a nonprofit fiscal sponsor for environmental education, agroecology, energy, and other sustainability activism in the Monterey and San Francisco Bay Areas and beyond. Our Global Ecologies initiatives document the conditions that structure human environmental crises and the consequential damages of environmental and human rights abuse. In partnership with affected communities, civil society and government entities, CPE fellows conduct independent and credible research on the environment/health/human rights nexus, generating reports and publications that inspire, educate, and encourage transformative change.
