Mission Statement

The Friends of Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County (FOMG) is a non-profit corporation founded in 1996 to support the financial needs of the Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County who are trained volunteers providing free or low cost gardening advice to local residents. The Master Gardener Program is a volunteer program that certifies home gardeners through extensive classroom and hands on training. Volunteers that are accepted into the program are trained by cooperative extension university and local experts in subjects such as plant pathology, soil health, entomology, sustainable gardening practices and integrated pest management. Once certified, Master Gardeners provide information to the public by creating demonstration and trial gardens for teaching, hosting telephone hotlines, websites, speaking at public events, writing articles for publications and the internet and partnering with other community programs, gardens and educational organizations.

About This Cause

The California Master Gardener program began in 1980 in Sacramento and Riverside Counties, followed by Fresno County in 1981 and Santa Clara County in 1982 and since those early days, certified University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Master Gardeners have become the primary extenders of horticultural information to the home gardening public. The Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County (MGSCC) program continues to grow with more than 300 certified Master Gardeners, contributing over 33,000 volunteer service hours per year (2013-2014) by reaching thousands of home gardening enthusiasts throughout the county. To become certified, each Master Gardener must attend a training curriculum that consists of core programs in horticulture, integrated pest management, and UC ANR policy, and successfully pass an exam to demonstrate proficiency. Following certification, each Master Gardener must donate a minimum of 25 hours of volunteer service in the first year and then 25 hours in following years as well as 12 hours of continuing education to maintain their appointments. Certification is renewed annually. The Santa Clara County program has created and maintains many field projects throughout the county. They include demonstration and teaching gardens at Guadalupe River Park (2), History San Jose (2), Prusch Farm Park (3), St. Louise Hospital, Martial Cottle County Park, Santa Clara County Service Center (2), McClellan Ranch, and Sunnyvale and Palo Alto Community parks. Historic orchards are located at Guadalupe River Park and Prusch Farm Park. California Native Gardens are located at Prusch Farm Park and the County Service Center. Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County are highly dedicated, motivated volunteers representing Santa Clara County’s cultural, socio-economic and educational diversity.
