About This Cause

Vision: The vision of FCE is to create a community where higher education is attainable. By engaging both students and parents in our work, we aim to create a community of learners who are armed with the right tools and information. Together, they play a pivotal role in sharing this information with other families about how best to take advantage of school resources and navigate the college admissions process, thus catalyzing change in the larger community. Core Values: At FCE, four core values define the ways we empower our students to reach their full potential 1. High Expectations: We encourage our students to move beyond standard grade-level performance and pursue college preparatory and advanced levels to ensure they are prepared to attend our nation’s competitive colleges. 2. Family and Community Engagement: We believe that meaningful family and community engagement is key to student success 3. Measurable Results: We measure our success by the number of students who graduate from college. Intermediate measures include the number of college prep classes taken, GPA, and percentage of college admissions. 4. College Graduation: At FCE, college acceptance is only a first step; a college degree is critical to our students’ economic and social mobility. College Bound: Through the College Bound Program, FCE provides academic and college planning support to first-generation, low-income students of color in grades 9-12 and their families. We encourage students to set high goals for themselves and help them take the steps they need to reach those goals. FCE students go beyond high school graduation requirements and participate in college preparatory, honors, and advanced placement courses. If they encounter difficulties or need extra help, we are there to support them academically and emotionally. Our objective is to help the entire family better navigate the admissions’ system and take advantage of the resources offered at their schools. We offer: 1. Academic advising, including help with course selection 2. One-on-one and group tutoring 3. Study skills enhancement 4. College planning and counseling 5. PSAT and SAT preparation 6. College application instruction and support 7. Local and state college tours 8. Mentoring and college coaching 9. Financial aid and scholarship guidance 10. Parent/guardian development and support 11. Leadership development 12. Career exploration 13. Mental Wellness Resources and Access College Success: Unlike many college access programs, FCE measures its success against college completion rates, not simply college enrollment. Through our College Success Program, we provide the services and support that students need to get the most out of college and earn their bachelor’s degrees. We provide: 1. College transition and orientation support 2. Academic and personal counseling 3. Financial aid and scholarship guidance 4. Information and support for parents and guardians 5. Transfer admission advising 6. Academic, personal, and career counseling 7. Leadership development 8. Mental Wellness Resources and Access
