ICAN's mission is to engage and inspire Vietnamese Americans to make a difference through advocacy, community service, humanitarian work and public education.
About This Cause
Founded in 2000, ICAN is one of the leading Vietnamese American community-based nonprofit organization working with Vietnamese children and families in the Bay area and in Vietnam. The Nuoi Day Tre Vui Manh (Happy 5), our flagship program in the Bay area, has helped thousands of Vietnamese families to better facilitate and ensure healthy development for their children - through multiple facets: parenting workshop, weekly radio show, community forum, outreach events etc. We also engage middle and high school students (from all backgrounds) to help at-risk students in US and in Vietnam. The 100 Bikes Team raises funds to give bikes to those deserving students in Vietnam who have to walk hours under the scorching sun to get to school. Programs such as relief efforts, CPAP machines, and eye cataract surgery help make adults who give gain a lot more in return. In seeking to build a more civically-engaged and informed community, we educate and engage Vietnamese Americans to respond to Census 2010 and help families (from all walks of life) to get free or affordable health insurance programs through Covered California. In working with local agencies such as San Jose Children's Discovery Museum, Choices for Children, Somos Mayfair, Asian Americans for Community Involvement, San Jose Public Library, San Jose State University etc. we also help to educate other ethnic communities about the Vietnamese language, culture and tradition. We inspire Vietnamese Americans and others, rich and poor, young and old, educated and uneducated, to give back and make this world a better place to live.
