Mission Statement
Education Pioneers (EP) believes extraordinary changes requires extraordinary people, and was founded in 2003 by social entrepreneur Scott Morgan, who aspired to build a pathway for a new generation of leaders from diverse backgrounds to occupy high-impact outside-of-the-classroom education leadership roles – leaders who could advance critical work that provides equitable access to an excellent education for every student inside the classroom, namely those in underserved communities. To date, EP has provided 4,000 highly-skilled leaders to over 750 education organizations nationwide (you can see our Partners here: http://www.educationpioneers.org/where-we-work/partners). Our Fellows fill talent gaps in four priority areas: data and analysis, operations, project management, and strategy/planning. We seek to collaborate with mission-aligned Partners who share our awareness that education reform ecosystem, as cited in an EdFuel report, will need 32,000 mid- to senior-level leaders by 2023.
About This Cause
In 2003, Education Pioneers’ founder Scott Morgan, a former teacher and Stanford Law graduate, sought to build a pathway for highly-skilled, diverse talent to occupy high-impact leadership roles in the education sector, beyond the classroom. He envisioned a continuous pipeline of Pioneers who could manage critical work that created equitable access to a high-quality education for all students, particularly those from low-income, under-resourced communities. The original Education Pioneers cohort, based in Oakland, was a small but mighty group of nine Fellows – many of whom serve in highly influential roles across the education sector. Today, EP offers efficient talent-matchmaking and talent accelerator services to build capacity for education organizations (“Partners”) in 13 large and mid-size cities: TALENT MATCHMAKING: We recruit and develop exceptional, diverse talent (Fellows) with two – six years of professional experience to drive immediate (10-week) and long-term (10-month) impact and build analytical, operational, and strategic capacity for our Partners via our Summer and Impact Fellowships. Fellows interact with their larger cohorts to exchange ideas and learn from experts about their local education ecosystem. TALENT ACCELERATION: Along with our robust Alumni services, we connect, provide professional development to, and offer networking services for emerging full-time education leaders working at key Partners via our popular Visiting Fellowship. Our 8-month Emerging Human Capital Leaders Initiative (EHCLI) trains education leaders on the most effective human capital practices. EP identifies emerging leaders from diverse backgrounds who believe all students can succeed – business and policy graduate students with analytic, operational, and strategic expertise excited to lend their experiences and skills to outside-the-classroom leadership positions. Our Partner Engagement Team collaborates with our Partner organizations (school districts, charter schools, and education nonprofits) to match Pioneers with the best-fit role for their skills and background. Their work helps students and teachers succeed in the classroom. Our team of leadership development professionals advance our Pioneers through programming and an expansive network, offering professional development and preparing them for a rewarding education career. Fellows engage in workshops framed around local issues and policies in tandem with targeted topics that help them grow as managers. Beyond the Fellowship, EP Alumni have access to continuous learning, leadership development, and a network of 4,000+ change agents that collectively champion towards reforms that provide equitable access to a high-quality education for every student. Beyond our local evaluation work, in 2016, EP commissioned the American Institutes for Research (AIR) to conduct an independent and methodologically rigorous evaluation study to improve our understanding of the impact our Fellows, Alumni, and broader organizational efforts have on the sector. We are thrilled to share some headlines from our most recent report release: • The majority of Education Pioneers alumni stay working in education after their Fellowships: 94 percent of alumni who worked in education in 2012 were still working in education in 2016. • Education Pioneers Fellows are highly educated: 84 percent of Fellows held or were pursuing an advanced degree at the time of their Fellowship. Education Pioneers is developing a racially and ethnically diverse network of leaders who hold senior leadership roles: 26 percent of African American/Black Education Pioneers alumni, 26 percent of Hispanic/Latinx alumni, and 32 percent of Asian/Pacific Islander alumni hold “C-suite” positions, including Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operations Officer, and other senior roles. Share your passion for this work and partner with us to drive necessary change so students and teachers and succeed inside the classroom.
