Mission Statement
SSRI helps English Springer Spaniels find foster and forever homes where they are loved and cared for. We identify people who want a Springer Spaniel as a loving family member. When life altering events happen and owners can no longer care for their Springers and must give them up for adoption, SSRI provides adoption referral assistance. This mission statement, created by the 15 founders of SSRI has guided SSRI since February 2007. We help Springer Spaniels with their physical and emotional needs so they can become adopted by loving humans. We are a group of dedicated Springer lovers who help Springers from shelters and homes where they were abandoned, abused, neglected and unwanted through no fault of their own. Every dog’s situation is unique and requires compassion and wisdom for both the dogs and the humans giving them up.
About This Cause
Our Values And Principles • We have the heart of the rescuers....we will do almost anything to help a Springer heal from emotional and physical illness, disease and abuse. • English Springer Spaniels are sentient beings worthy of love and respect. • The culture of “it’s about the dogs, not the politics” was established at the initial meeting of SSRI and continues to be our mantra. • We love the foster Springers as much as our own pups. • We believe a senior Springer has as much value as a Springer puppy. • A senior Springer has as much right to medical care as a young dog. • We love new members. Our membership is inclusive of people, children and adults who love Springers. Everyone from children to seniors are welcome. The youngest member has been 8 and oldest are in their 70s. • Our common bond: we love dogs and Springers in particular. • Our valued volunteers and fosters become our friends, our families. • We are a fun loving group that works hard to save Springers from bad to really bad situations and make them whole again through good medical care and love. • Enough funding is available for all rescues • We are a part of a rescue community. • Make and raise funding for our Springers then use it wisely through relationships with good and caring vets and trainers. • Take in the sick Springers and make them whole. • We leave no senior behind and they will never die alone, we are there with them. How We Differ from Other Rescues: Before being placed in foster care, where other dogs or animals live, our foster dogs undergo fecal and heartworm tests and physical exams, ensuring the health of all animals in the care of our foster homes. If necessary, we will board a dog to protect foster home dogs and people. We are in the matchmaking business. We will wait until the right person or people are found that match the dog’s personality, likes and dislikes and needs. Although most are adopted within 6 months, some have been in our care for as little as a month, or as long as 2.5 years. Supporting Fosters: 1. Fosters don’t pay for medical care nor grooming....unless they want to. 2. Sometimes we pay for the dog food while in foster care for those who can foster but can’t afford an extra dog to feed. 3. We transport dogs to vet appointments when the foster is busy or unable to go. Every Life Counts: 1. When other rescues declined to help a dog who is too sick or “unadoptable” we have stepped in and saved the dog. 2. We work with emotionally abused dogs. We share our knowledge with fosters, work with trainers and even have a relationship with a ranch that works with the severest behavioral challenges. 3. We will take in Springer Spaniels of all ages. Hospice Care and Ending the Life of a Foster dog: 1. We will provide hospice care for dogs who can’t be healed. 2. We keep trying to heal a dog who needs medical help even if the prognosis is dim. 3. We listen to our fosters and rescue partners. We make decisions together. When the decision to euthanize has been made, all other options have been explored and used. It is the hardest decision to make thus requires time and much consideration. 4. We pay for the cremation of the deceased foster dog who dies within our care to give them the respect that they deserve even in death. Co-labor in the Rescue Community: 1. We have supported other rescues in need of funds, emotional support and mentorship. 2. When there wasn’t a Cocker Rescue in Las Vegas, we formed one with 501 (c) 3 status organization. We shared our knowledge and mentored the members during the first year. 3. We saw a need in the winter months for a rescue event and started Find Your Furry Valentine in 2012 to form a rescue community in Las Vegas that works together. We have shared in the funds we have gained from the event with the neediest rescues. Fiscal Responsibility: 1. We are fiscally solvent because of our fundraising activities. Our bills are paid within 48 hours of receipt of the invoice from the vets and boarding facilities. A experienced CPA serves as our treasurer. 2. We learn from our experiences both rescuing and fundraising. We track each dog’s expenses. We track our event fundraising performance by shifts to guide future efficiencies. 3. Transparency of our financials is important to us because we have legal obligations as a nonprofit organization. Upon active members’ requests we willingly provide the June and December of the Profit and Loss Statement including donations, fundraising, insurance costs and expenses in total and itemized by each foster dog. 4. We work with vets, who regularly discount their services to our rescue understanding every dollar raised needs to stretch to help all the dogs. 5. Every member and board member donates their time to Senior Spaniel Rescue Inc. No salaries are paid to board members.
