Mission Statement

Fristers is dedicated to helping teenage parents build healthy and stable lives and families through education, mentoring, case management, and the support of a caring community.

About This Cause

Becoming a parent, at any age, can be a life-altering experience. When school-aged students become parents, the new responsibilities can be overwhelming. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, only 50% of teenage mothers receive a high school diploma, leading to high rates of unemployment, poverty and reliance on public assistance. They face increased risk for postpartum depression, domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, and are often isolated with little to no support. Children of teenage mothers have a lower probability of obtaining the emotional and financial resources they need throughout childhood to develop into independent, productive, well-adjusted adults. They are rarely enrolled in preschool, and at risk of falling behind educationally and socially. Fristers was established in 2008 to help teenage parents build healthy and stable lives and families. Our four life-changing programs, LifeCoach, Kidsters, Just for Dads and Couples Group, are designed to improve mental health and well-being, educational and economic outcomes, parenting and relationship skills. Programming addresses the needs of the young mother, father, and child, individually and collectively, and incorporates weekly support groups, parenting and life skills classes, help for high school graduation, introduction to college and vocational training, work readiness and financial literacy workshops, healthy relationships training, mentoring, case management, community resources, early childhood education curriculum, developmental milestones assessment and early intervention services for children. The majority of classes are taught by our strategic network of community partners, utilizing evidence-based curriculums. Meals are included and in-city transportation is available. Families can stay in the programs as long as they are within the age range of 13-25 years old, which offers long-term support and promotes lasting change. Fristers serves greater Orange County with chapters in Anaheim, Santa Ana, and San Juan Capistrano, which include the #1 and #2 ranked cities in Orange County in terms of teen births. With Fristers’ help, young parents are becoming successful parents and finding hope for their future. Children are improving their developmental, social, and educational gains. Couples are building healthy relationships and families are being strengthened. One hundred percent of Fristers’ graduates have a high school diploma or GED. No other program in the County offers our spectrum of services for these vulnerable young families.
