AMAZON DRAGONS PADDLING CLUB

PORTLAND, Oregon, 97213-0111 United States

Mission Statement

Amazon Dragons Paddling Club is an organization which provides lesbians with camaraderie, fitness, and physical strength through competitive dragon boat racing. We convey positive lesbian visibility through competition, personal integrity, community service and good sportsmanship.

About This Cause

The Amazon Dragons were founded in Portland, Oregon in 1992. The club was started as part of the Lesbian Community Project to give a face to lesbians living in the local community. During that time gay and lesbian awareness and acceptance was not what it is today. For more than 20 years, the Amazons have welcomed all women 16 years and older to join and compete in the international sport of dragon boat racing. Our season starts February 1st and runs through October. In February the club members, and women interested in joining, participate in fitness activities in the gym twice a week. On-water practices three times a week begin in March, on Sunday morning and Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Members are expected to attend scheduled practices and quarterly general membership meetings.
