About This Cause
Olmoti Clinic and Health Center is a rural medical facility serving the Maasai people of northern Tanzania. It was developed by Our One Community, a U.S. nonprofit foundation, with oversight by Olmoti Tanzanian Organization, a registered nonprofit in Tanzania. Medical staff is supported by the Longido District government. A district-wide trachoma and cataract outreach, a vital focus on fistula, and HIV screening and treatment are among Olmoti Clinic’s specialized programs. A fully equipped surgery center and patient wards provide capacity for advanced services and specialized staff to address health needs across the community. The village’s fresh water delivery comes via Olmoti Clinic’s 6-kilometer pipeline with spigots throughout the community. It has transformed life in this remote region. The water project meets a dire need in northern Tanzania where clean water is scarce: Maasai children in this isolated region have suffered water-borne diseases after drinking from polluted open pit wells. Poor sanitation leads to trachoma, the major cause of blindness in Africa. Women trudged for miles uphill to fill water jugs, staggering back under the crippling weight. Besides connecting the nearest water source to Olmoti Clinic, the pipeline has tap stands for the 1,500 Maasai living in the area. A new local water committee ensures management, repair and replacement of the system over time. A primary school, youth tutoring program, high school scholarships, and adult education classes ensure learning opportunities for all children and adults. Olmoti Primary School provides education from grades 1 through 4, with preparations for levels up to grade 7. Olmoti Tanzanian Organization began the school with two classrooms in 2015, and within three years enrolled nearly 300 children in morning and afternoon classes, prompting an expansion, with four additional classrooms constructed in 2019. Enrollment has reached 405 students. Growing enthusiasm for education among the Maasai prompted Olmoti Clinic/Our One Community to begin a program of assistance for boys and girls seeking to attend Tanzanian government high schools and vocational schools. While the fees are modest by Western standards, they are beyond the means of many Maasai families. In the program’s first year, dozens of families stepped up to send their sons and daughters to high school. Because girls are typically are subjected to marriage in their early teens, this education opportunity affords teen-age girls a chance to forge a different future. Private donations allow us to provide these out-of-reach opportunities. Olmoti women are creating a fledgling business, while serving a local need. Using sewing machines provided by Olmoti Clinic, they make non-disposable feminine pads, so girls can attend school every day and providing a new source of income.
