Mission Statement

Our mission is to sustain and support a more equitable community through growing, learning, cooking, and sharing fresh food together.

About This Cause

Common Good City Farm is an urban farm in DC’s LeDroit Park neighborhood. Our mission is to sustain and support a more equitable community through growing, learning, cooking, and sharing fresh food together. Ultimately, our vision is for urban farming to serve as a means to combat food injustice, build community, steward the urban environment, and create safe places for people young and old to explore and connect with the environment. Our beautiful half-acre green space has grown over 41,000 pounds of produce and hosted over 10,000 visitors––thanks to the 2,500 volunteers who worked over 1,000 hours each year to make it happen. At Common Good, we put an emphasis on serving our low-income neighbors, and we focus on creating the opportunity for everyone in the neighborhood to come together over good food and good deeds. We believe that fresh, healthy, and sustainably-grown produce shouldn’t be reserved for the wealthy, and that good food is a basic human right. As an urban community, the produce in our grocery stores is often transported long distances in ways that have a cascading impact on the environment. Eating food where it is grown has less of an impact on the planet and environment. By strengthening access to affordable, healthy food, and providing resources for people to learn to grow their own food, we are reducing environmental impact while helping to empower the marginalized members of our community with the skills and resources to make healthy choices. Common Good works hard to be a welcoming space for a diverse population—to that end, we spent 2017 developing a racial equity statement and incorporating racial equity principles into our work. We believe in connecting diverse individuals to each other; helping people reconnect to their historical food culture; fostering connections between marginalized community members and local representatives and community groups; and informing ourselves and others about policies, laws, regulations, or decisions that may negatively impact our community.
