Mission Statement

Youth mission is to motivate, inspire and empower youth, family and educators to dismantle the school to prison pipeline by challenging existing systems and structures

About This Cause

Youth Organized and United to Help (Y.O.U.th) was established in 2007 in response to the death of 14 year old Davonte Lightfoot. Davonte’s death inspired an annual youth summit, a non-profit, and numerous community events for families and youth. Y.O.U.th's work has been documented and published as an academic document in partnership with Professor Alma Trinidad on Critical Indigenous Pedagogy of Place published in Sustainable Solutions: University–Community Partnerships (ed. Wortham-Galvin, Allen and Sherman). In 2018, in partnership with the digital marketing company Goodie Nation, Y.O.U.th’s board and founder adopted a new mission. To inspire, motivate, and empower youth, family, and educators to dismantle the school to prison pipeline by challenging existing systems and structures. Our program, BooksNotBarsOR focuses on the school to prison pipeline and raising awareness on this issue in Oregon. Through literacy programs, parent advocacy resources and educational bias training workshops, we are addressing the needs of youth and families across the Portland Metro area.
