Mission Statement

Our mission is to accelerate the ocean's return to balance and abundance, through fearless innovations in scientific research, education, outreach, and policy, using unique collaborations of individuals and organizations in the U.S. and abroad.

About This Cause

Global non-profit organization OCEARCH and its partners have been engaged in a comprehensive, multi-year, multi-institutional, collaborative study of the white shark in the western North Atlantic Ocean since 2012. Dr. Robert Hueter, Chief Scientist for OCEARCH and former Director of Mote Marine Laboratory’s Center for Shark Research (where he remains a Senior Scientist Emeritus), has been leading this project in collaboration with 30 scientific organizations including universities, independent laboratories, and aquariums. Field work utilizes the unique research facilities of the research vessel M/V OCEARCH where collaborating researchers conduct studies on free-ranging white sharks along the U.S. and Canadian coasts with the objective of collecting comprehensive, open-access data on four different life stages: young-of-the-year (YOY), juveniles, subadults, and mature adults. OCEARCH conducts two to three ocean research expeditions a year, providing the research vessel and support team to the collaborative science team at no cost to the scientists. Funding from Rock the Ocean will help support these important field work opportunities. For more information on the 25 projects on our Western North Atlantic White Shark Study you can check out our science brief.
