Mission Statement

The Meaningful Movies Project is a non-profit organization that assists neighborhoods, groups and individuals organize, educate and advocate using the power of social justice documentary film and relevant conversation to build positive and meaningful community and a more just and peaceful world.

About This Cause

The Meaningful Movies Project (MMP) supports a network of volunteer-run neighborhood Meaningful Movies Groups that organize free online and in-person community events where people gather to learn about important issues and talk about hard topics. We use the art of social justice documentary film as a springboard for important conversations about the issues of our time, including topics such as globalization, racism, poverty, gender identity, women’s rights, voter suppression and human rights. There is never a fee to attend and participate, so the experience is accessible for all. Our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion has been clear from the start, when we pledged in 2003 that all Meaningful Movies events would be free and open to the public. One of our essential values is a belief that all people, regardless of income, should have access to participate in these community discussions, so there is no charge for any of our events. The support that MMP provides to our local neighborhood groups is also freely given. We have only one paid part-time position. Our manager, Melinda Raebyne, is an established and awarding filmmaker who is working with the board and venue leaders to grow our youth intern program, recruit board members who typically don’t get a seat at the table, do outreach for new groups and volunteers, build partnerships with groups in marginalized communities, and reach as wide an audience as possible. Under her leadership, we have increased the number of youth and BIPOC group leaders and volunteers and are inviting new board members into our organization. In the end, we do this work because we believe we need more conversations about important issues. That is how we will learn from each other. That is how more of us will decide to actively work for peace and justice. . As a network of many autonomous Meaningful Movies Groups, we support one another for the common good of our own communities, as well as the larger community as a whole.
