Mission Statement
To Provide safety, nurturing, and stability to children and families through quality services and trauma-informed care.
About This Cause
Each year, over 100 kids — infant to age 14 — are brought to Watson Children’s Shelter. These children have been abused, neglected, abandoned or their family is in crisis. Most children are brought to the shelter by social workers or the police. On average, each child stays at the shelter for 60-90 days, though some children need to stay longer until their family crisis is resolved or longer term supportive care can be arranged. We welcome children 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our two shelters are designed to provide a safe, comfortable and welcoming stay for the children. Some of the children have never had a bedroom, never eaten a true family meal, never had toys and art supplies. They often arrive with just the clothes on their backs. Here, they have their own bed, a place for their belongings, rooms for play, crafts, dining, and learning. We provide them with clothing, nourishing meals, and everything to experience and enjoy childhood. In our prevention program, Healthy Foundations, we work with families prenatally to help them receive the support they need to create and sustain a healthy home environment while also focusing on the parent/child bond. This program looks to prevent a child to never have to experience trauma that would have them end up in a shelter care program.
