Mission Statement
St. Peter's Health Foundation inspires a culture of giving that supports exceptional and compassionate care for our community’s health and well-being.
About This Cause
St. Peter’s Health, located in Helena, serves five counties in southwestern Montana with an estimated population of 96,642 (U.S. Census estimate July 1, 2019). A not-for-profit, community based health system, St. Peter’s provides general, specialty and emergency health care services for everyone, regardless of ability to pay, in a region where 10.2 percent of the population is considered to be in poverty, 27.4 percent of individuals live below 200% of the poverty level, and an estimated 7.9 percent of the population under 65 does not have health insurance. St. Peter’s is an active participant in University of Utah Health’s Clinically Integrated Network (since 2018) and is also cultivating non-exclusive clinical affiliations with Bozeman Health—another independent, not-for-profit, community hospital in Bozeman, Montana—as well as Seattle Children’s Hospital. St. Peter’s Health is governed by a Board comprised of community members and has no shareholders to whom returns are distributed; all profits are reinvested in its mission and community. Each year, St. Peter’s gives back over $18 million to the community through health education, complimentary ambulance services at sporting events and other large community gatherings, and free or reduced-cost health care to ensure that financial limitations do not prevent individuals from seeking or receiving care. With the only full-service acute care facility in the region, St. Peter’s serves Lewis and Clark, Broadwater, Jefferson, Meagher and Powell Counties, which combined encompass 11,026 square miles. St. Peter’s service area is defined as ‘rural’ by several federal organizations (Office of Management and Budget; Federal Office of Health Policy; U.S. Department of Agriculture), and the organization was recently named a 2021 “Top 100 Rural & Community Hospital” by The Chartis Center for Rural Health. Although founded in 1883 by the St. Peter’s Episcopal Church parish vestry and the Montana Episcopal Diocese, St. Peter’s is not associated with any religious organizations. St. Peter’s mission is “to improve the health, wellness and quality of life for the people and communities we serve.” St. Peter’s Health Foundation was established in 1978 to encourage and manage philanthropic contributions to St. Peter’s. As stated in its mission, the Foundation “inspires a culture of giving that supports exceptional and compassionate care for our community’s health and well-being.” A distinct 501(c)(3) entity from the parent organization, the Foundation functions as a quasi-department within St. Peter’s during its day-to-day activities, and all general operating expenses are paid by St. Peter’s Health.
