Ghana has only 95 Ophthalmologists serving a population of about 30 million people. Most of these ophthalmologists are concentrated in the urban areas. this leaves a large area of the rural sector with no access to good eye care. The location of the Eye Institute is at Juaben which is in the rural farming area in the Ashanti region. This was begun in December 2019 and we are now up to the tiling stage, after completing the roofing the ceiling in 2023 The project is at a critical stage where an amount of approximately $850,000 is needed to complete the construction. Every donation will go a long way towards the goal. Update July 2021- Roofing of the EYE INSTITUTE has been completed. Donations still needed to complete the project by the end of 2021. WAHF hopes to start operation by early 2022. Update December 2022- During 2022 the first phase of the plumbing work, electrical work, perimeter wall around the entire 2 acre lot was completed. The second and third phases of the electricals, plumbing, tiling of the entire hospital, landscaping all need to be done among other things. Update 2023 Second and third phases of the plumbing works and electrical works completed. Ceiling of entire facility completed Next stages are tiling of the whole facility. third stages of plumbing and electrical work Landscaping and other items. In addition WAHF needs to procure state of the art equipment for the hospital including the two operating theaters. furniture, hiring and training of top level staff as well as working capital. A total of $2.5 million is needed to accomplish this for the Eye Institute to be operational by September 2024.
