ORGANIZATION FOR THE RESOLUTION OF AGUNOT INC

NEW YORK, New York, 10040-0327 United States

Mission Statement

The Organization for the Resolution of Agunot (ORA) believes that a get must never be used as a weapon. The Jewish divorce process requires the participation of both parties. All too often, a spouse refuses to comply in order to control the other party and utilize the get to extort concessions. ORA strives to eliminate the infliction of abuse within the Jewish divorce process. ORA resolves current cases of get-refusal by combining facilitation with advocacy, and prevents future cases by promoting the universal adoption of halachic prenuptial agreements. Our services are provided free of charge, and we are a registered 501c(3).

About This Cause

ORA’s mission is to eliminate abuse from the Jewish divorce process. ORA empowers women who are denied a get (bill of Jewish divorce) to free themselves from the shackles of abusive marriages. These women, otherwise known as agunot (singular: agunah), are controlled by their ex-husbands with seemingly no recourse but to give in to extortion to secure their freedom. Agunot come from across the denominational and socioeconomic spectrum of the Jewish community. ORA advocates to ensure that a get is issued unconditionally and in a timely fashion. To date, we have secured the freedom of over 275 agunot. Furthermore, ORA creates social change for Jewish women and girls by reframing get-refusal as a form of domestic abuse and implementing several initiatives to prevent the agunah crisis going forward. These initiatives target teens, young adults, and adult members of Jewish communities throughout North America, roughly half of whom are female.
