Mission Statement

To improve the quality of lives for monkeys retiring from research facilities, pet monkey ownerships, and the entertainment industry by providing them with a permanent and enriching sanctuary.

About This Cause

Great ape retirement from biomedical research has been a priority for years; however, monkeys have not received the same advocacy. Now that chimpanzees have been helped, it is time to focus on retiring monkeys as they too are primates deserving of our respect. Approximately 110,000 monkeys are living in research labs and holding facilities nationwide - with less than 1% currently being sent to sanctuaries. Thankfully, each year more researchers are contacting sanctuaries when studies conclude. Unfortunately, space is limited and many sanctuaries cannot welcome potential retirees, leaving the lab to euthanize or place the monkeys who would be retired into new, or terminal studies. Integral to the success of Primates Incorporated are its ten board members, an advisory committee consisting of a variety of professionals, and the hiring of a primate behavior specialist, experienced animal-care manager, and part-time animal care staff. Together they are providing top-notch care to the monkeys Our sanctuary currently offers training in primate husbandry and behavioral research for high school graduates (must be 18 to volunteer in animal husbandry), college students who are interested in pursuing a career with animals, and anyone else who is eager to learn how to provide quality care to primates. Husbandry training entails an apprenticeship where students shadow primate caregivers and assist with all aspects of primate care. Once certain safety checkpoints are complete, volunteers are able to provide care independently, with caregivers present. Behavioral research training helps students learn to recognize, define, and record primate behaviors in order to measure the primates’ rehabilitation and overall well-being. The behavioral research students work closely with the Primate Behavior Specialist and, if they desire, they will become active researchers involved in an ongoing behavioral study conducted by Primates Incorporated. This is an opportunity that many students do not have and can greatly increase their chances of receiving competitive scholarships, internships, and even job placement. Another goal of Primates Incorporated is to educate young people to become decision makers who will make conscious choices to build a better world. We want to incorporate students into our mission and will do so by offering informative tours of our sanctuary, doing educational outreach at schools, and giving younger students an opportunity to be involved from their classroom by collaboratively creating enrichment items that the primates will use in the sanctuary. We also provide many opportunities that allow a person to volunteer out of their home--at any location throughout the world. Our overall mission with these educational initiatives is to encourage a general interest in the welfare of captive primates, generate sensitivity to primate welfare issues, and change the opinions and attitudes of primate retirement in a way that will improve the future for monkeys in laboratories. We take pride in working with laboratories from throughout the country to retire monkeys to our sanctuary. The sanctuary currently is home to eleven monkeys from the pet trade and labs.
