Mission Statement
A performing arts partnership between college students and elementary and middle school children, CityStep promotes creative self-expression and community-building through dance. Each week, teams of college students teach in local schools a yearlong curriculum aimed at boosting self-confidence, mastery and mutual understanding. At the end of every year, kids from across the city come together and, with their college mentors, collaborate on an original production about a theme relevant to their lives, told entirely through dance. CityStep was founded at Harvard 30 years ago as a student organization, and it continues to serve children in the surrounding schools in the City of Cambridge, MA; It now thrives as well at Penn in Philadelphia; and was recently launched at Princeton, engaging Trenton youth, and at Yale, engaging youth in New Haven. CityStep Org Inc, formed in 2016, exists to strengthen the existing companies and create a replicable model so that CityStep can expand to communities in need nationwide.
