Mission Statement
Lift Up Uganda, Inc. was founded in 2015 with the goal of helping the people of northern Uganda through improving EDUCATION and HEALTH CARE. People of all ages can benefit by promoting education to encourage self-sufficiency. Improving health through education for health promotion, illness prevention, and provision of direct health services allows for healthier people to help their families and communities thrive.
About This Cause
Lift Up Uganda started in 2015 to support a Ugandan man to study for his MDiv at St Vladimir's Seminary in Yonkers, NY. He graduated in 2019 and returned to serve his people. A second man from Uganda is in his 3rd year of studies for his MDiv at St Vladimir's. He will also return to serve his people. A 20-year war that ended in 2008 led by Joseph Kony saw massive damage in northern Uganda. Thousands were placed in IDP camps for their safety. and thousands were slaughtered by the rebels. They lost all skills for means to support their families with gardening and raising animals. Their schools, churches, and homes were destroyed. Many children were abducted as child soldiers and sex slaves. After the war, they required extensive help to return to their communities. Most people there still suffer from PTSD. In 2014 we opened the St Nektarios Health Center Level 3 for Primary and Emergency medical care in Gulu, Uganda. Later came solar power, water well, and Wi-Fi. Staff consists of doctors, nurse midwives, nurse, laboratory technician and receptionist. In 2016 a Maternity wing was added to provide a safe and clean place for prenatal and postnatal care and delivery of babies. Special equipment, medications and supplies are available for our nurse wives to deliver care. An Ambulance is available to transport mothers and babies to a hospital for complications. An Immunization Program and Well Baby Care were started. Our midwives are Master Trainers to teach WHO classes on Helping Mothers and Babies Survive to other midwives, nurses and doctors. Our Health Center is considered a Hospital as care is available 24/7. A Staff quarters was added as all staff are on call for our patients. Inpatient rooms were added as we converted our waiting room for a female, male and children's inpatient rooms. Our staff travel to remote villages to offer outreach care. Most of our patients are desperately poor and can not afford any fee, so we are continually fundraising to cover the Health Center's needs. Lift Up Uganda started a Nursery and Primary School in 2010 and now has 390 students. LUU has a School Sponsorship program to pay tuition for orphans, single parent homes and girls who rarely get to go to school. A Community Children's Library opened in June 2023 and all children are encouraged to come and to learn. We are trying to change the culture of no importance to reading, one child at a time, by encouraging frequent use of the library. Computers are available for the librarian to teach skills to children and teachers. Solar and WiFi were started in the school and library. LUU has sponsored many local people to study for professions of nursing, midwifery, lab technicians, agriculture, accounting, etc. We started a Mothers Union for women who were taught to sew and to make African crafts to provide school fees for children. These crafts are sold in the US. Education and Health remain the mission of Lift Up Uganda.
