SAFE COALITION

FRANKLIN, Massachusetts, 02038-0434 United States

Mission Statement

SAFE is a regional coalition of community partners in Western Norfolk County (serving Franklin, Foxboro, Mansfield, Medway, Millis, Norfolk, Plainville, Walpole, Wrentham and surrounding towns) who have come together to provide a pathway for support, education, treatment options and coping mechanisms for those affected by substance use disorder. We do so by empowering those affected, including their families, with the tools necessary to succeed on their journey to recovery. We understand that while I can’t, we can.

About This Cause

Beginning in 2015, the SAFE Coalition was founded on the heels of the opioid epidemic. Many in our community were living in the shadows of stigma as they had been impacted by addiction and had no where to turn for support. A small group of committed citizens gathered together and began reaching out to families, businesses, police, fire, school systems, and faith communities to engage in conversations that supported healing and compassion. Since 2015, the SAFE Coalition has grown and developed partnerships in over 28 communities with a focus on recovery, supporting those impacted by substance use, domestic violence, mental health, and sexual assault. SAFE is proud to offer programming in the areas of education, prevention, family support, adolescent support, treatment options, and recovery services. In regards to prevention, we host Narcan trainings, a mock bedroom to aid parents in awareness called Hidden in Plain Sight, we hold a weekly adolescent peer to peer program which frames social emotional wellness as the foundation piece of self-development, and we invite family meetings with the goal of creating conversational plans around sensitive topics such as family history as it related to substance use. Through the education lens we work with school systems, first responders, and local prescribers to discuss ways to recognize, converse, and aid in the destigmatizing of substance use and mental health concerns. This has opened the door for more compassionate policing, school reform, and medical conversations. When we discuss treatment, we use this term broadly. Our organization holds closely to the understanding that there are various forms of treatment an individual may benefit from. We work hard to assess with the person what their goals are and then review treatment or support options. We hold programming at our office for adolescents who have been recently suspended as a suspension alternative program and we also refer to local programming that may better fit a community member’s needs. Lastly, our work in the world of recovery is something we are all so proud of. We wholeheartedly honor the belief that recovery is always in sight. We hold closely to the idea that peer work and family systems are a necessary part of healing and that it is our larger community that must hold the light for us when we feel ours has been blown out. We host 4 recovery support groups for family, 12 step recovery yoga, and AA beginners meeting, legal support through sections and juvenile care and one on one personal counsel. We have a grief counselor who sits with folks to work through some of the most sensitive moments and we partner with a clinical program to aid in the therapeutic work of trauma and healing. The work of the SAFE coalition honors the understanding that through connection and partnership, healing and recovery are possible. As this has been a grassroots program, until three months ago we have functioned solely as a volunteer organization. Yet, as the needs in our community have grown, we are thrilled to announce that we have added one paid position. Our hope is to continue to listen to the community and bring support that is needed, compassionate, and sustainable.
