Mission Statement

Nu Sass Productions promotes marginalized genders in the arts in DC.

About This Cause

Nu Sass Productions promotes marginalized genders in all aspects of theater, especially in those roles traditionally dominated by cis-men. We explore how disregarding prescribed genders can change the overall experience for the audience. We function as a critical foothold in the theatre world for artists who face discrimination and lose opportunities based on their gender, age, body type, or race. Above all, Nu Sass aims to create engaging, thought-provoking art while being a responsible local and global citizen. In 2024 Nu Sass will celebrate 15 years in Washington, DC. We have produced 41 productions of 32 plays, including 4 original commissions, 15 world premieres, 22 DC premieres, and 7 co-productions. In addition we have participated in innumerable readings of new and developing plays in various formats from the Nu Drafts bar crawl to the Kennedy Center Page to Stage Festival. Since 2016, when we began recording metrics, we have hired artists for 319 positions on and off stage. Of those 319, 75% are DC residents, and 80% are of a marginalized gender. In our 14 years of producing we’ve received 3 Capital Fringe Audience Awards, a nomination for the John Aniello Award for Outstanding Emerging Theatre, 6 Helen Hayes recommendations, and 3 Helen Hayes Award nominations. Nu Sass is unlike many other theatres in that our focus is on the artists served by our organization, rather than the audiences that view our works. We work to dismantle the system of oppression that has kept the non cis-male community in the margins of theatre by providing critical first credits and prestige positions to those who have been historically denied the opportunity. Many of our collaborators have gone on to work with some of the most prestigious theatres in the region, the nation, and even internationally. By providing these artists the opportunity to work with us, we are training generations of marginalized genders to become leaders of American theatre and to continue breaking down the barriers that keep the stories, visions, and voices of the marginalized off the stage and in the shadows. This is not to say we do not focus on our community as well - after all, a play without an audience is missing half the equation. We have sought to dismantle barriers to access for our audiences in a variety of ways. We produce staged readings, micro-festivals, and professional productions in all wards of DC. We believe it is our duty as artists to bring art to the people as often as we ask them to come to us. We have performed in church basements, backyards, local bars, public parks, art galleries, and community buildings, to name a few. We have also established a Pay What You Will program for every performance of our professional shows. Every ticket to every performance is listed for free, and it is at the audience's discretion to determine how much - if any - they'll pay. In this way, we ensure that financial barriers will not prohibit audiences from engaging with our art. In 2023 we served 588 audience members, with 228 of them volunteering the data that they are from DC, MD, or VA. An additional 37 volunteered that they were from outside the DMV. We do not have data on the other 323 audience members, but expect them to follow a similar ratio, which would mean roughly 87% of our audiences are from DC, MD, or VA. Additionally, 352 of those tickets were provided free of cost - nearly 60% of all sold tickets. Roughly 30% of our 2023 audience were members of the BIPOC community.
