Mission Statement
To provide high-quality, culturally competent medical care for LGBTQ persons and their families regardless of ability to pay. To train the next generation of physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals to provide care for LGBTQ persons and improve the broader healthcare delivery landscape. To adequately document health disparities and health-related needs of the LGBTQ community in our state, especially among gay and bisexual black men of all ages, transgender individuals, and persons over 55. Leverage private and public resources to provide a range of medical and support services, through an integrated team approach, to improve patient outcomes and satisfaction.
About This Cause
Corktown Health is a non-profit community-based organization providing HIV support services since it was founded (under the predecessor name Health Emergency Lifeline Programs) in 1986. The agency is one of the largest HIV providers in Michigan serving 1,500 people living with HIV annually. In 2017 the agency opened Corktown Health Center, Michigan’s first medical home to focus on the LGBTQ+ community. Medical services are now fully integrated, and the organization maintains strong partnerships with Wayne State University School of Medicine, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, the City of Detroit Health Department and Delta Dental Foundation of Michigan. Programs reach well over 4,000 individuals each year, approximately 30% of whom are persons living with HIV. Current services include the following: Current Programming: • Primary Medical Care • HIV Medical Care • PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) and PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) for HIV prevention • STI Testing & Treatment • Behavioral Health Services • Geriatric Care • Gender Affirming Care • Early Intervention Services & Medical Case Management for Persons Living with HIV • Emergency Financial Assistance & Housing Services for Persons Living with HIV • Food & Nutrition services including nutritional counseling, food vouchers, and health education for Persons Living with HIV as well as those living with diabetes, pre-diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease and obesity • Health Insurance Navigation • Tobacco Cessation • Telehealth Services • Corktown Grows Wellness & Gardening Programs • Cancer Screening & Awareness
