Mission Statement

DC STORM is a non-profit organization which assist and mentor middle school students in Washington, DC. STORM is an acronym for Students Taught Organization and Respect through Mentoring. Program goals are to teach inner-city middle school students about the values of good citizenship, ethics and literacy through mentoring.

About This Cause

DC STORM provides positive role models as mentors to expand the horizons for inner-city middle school preteens. DC STORM program goals are to teach the students about the values of good citizenship, ethics and literacy through mentoring. Mentors stress both academic and physical achievement. DC STORM members will demonstrate sound moral character and honesty in every aspect of life. DC STORM participants are exposed to people of all cultures with the understanding that everyone is not the same but deserves to be respected. Development of discipline, confidence, self-respect and commitment are expected and achieved through actions of the members of DC STORM. The DC STORM youth understand and are committed to perform 50 hours of community service each year. Type of Activities to achieve goals of the program are: Enrichment Services which include but not limited to keynote guest speakers dealing with various subjects on education, networking, completing resumes for quality high schools in the Washington, DC area, and members of DC STORM are instructed on the importance of the core curriculum courses in high school. Members are encouraged to apply for academic scholarship/grant fund for inner-city students that have met their academic responsibilities. College students are invited to share their educational experiences. DC STORM members are bused to retirement facilities and homeless shelters four times a year. Educational Activities which include a mandatory after school homework club, report cards and bi-weekly grade checks that are viewed by mentors and the participants are taught good health and grooming practices. The stronger academic members of the group tutor other students who need assistance in academic areas. Cultural Activities include visiting museums and other points of interest in Washington, DC and other cities traveled. Community service is a must for all member of the DC STORM Group. We participate in sporting event not common in the inner-city like, kayaking, ice skating, tennis, golf, hockey, and snowboarding. DC STORM members dine often as a group in culturally different restaurants to experience their menu. Guest speaker of different cultures are invited to speak to the group to share information about their differences and accomplishments. DC STORM participants in the past have traveled down the Anacostia River in Washington, DC for environmental and scientific purposes. Social Activities include attending events of local high schools, colleges and sporting events of professional teams. DC STORM participants have often conducted basketball clinics for local elememtary school children in Washington, DC. Participants are invited to open gym activities where there is a strong emphasis on fair play and respect for others involved.
