Mission Statement
Reach Himalaya Ministries is a compassionate working group reaching the indigenous people of the Himalayas. We provide humanitarian and economic resources to thousands of remote villages. We show the love of Jesus Christ by helping and teaching those in need. For example, our native missionaries provide Bible-based adult literacy programs. As villagers learn to read and write, they develop more self-confidence leading to increased self-development, thus, better ways to provide for their families. Awareness of health issues, better sanitation practices, creative activities, etc., become important to them. We provide micro-economic support that leads to greater independence. RHMI buys cows, buffaloes, and goats for native families providing meat and milk to nourish their children. They sell extra milk to others helping them earn extra income and in cases they turn the resources they gather into a manufacturing plant to make cheese and other products to help whole communities also rise out of poverty.
About This Cause
Reach Himalaya Ministries is a faith-based organization founded upon the love of Jesus Christ for all people, specifically reaching out to provide support to the remote villages of the Himalayas. We are natives of the Himalayan regions ourselves. Our passion is to reach every remote village throughout our land with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We believe that it is also very important to meet the pressing needs of the rural people. To provide help and support where it is needed the most urgently, we have developed several secular programs that are run through Reach Himalaya Ministries. 100% of your sponsorship money goes to the designated program. Nothing is taken out for other expenses Here are some of the programs we offer to the remote villagers: Rebuild Nepal: Mentor a Child Education Scholarship program provides school fees, textbooks, school supplies and uniforms for children that would never be able to afford them. For only $1 a day or $35 a month, you can help mentor a young boy or girl in the Himalayas. Your gift of compassion helps break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and superstition-and ultimately the bondage of the caste system. When you sponsor a child, you'll receive an information packet with your child's photo. School reconstruction program helps to repair or rebuild schools in very remote villages. Many of the schools in remote villages were damaged or destroyed by the earthquakes in 2015. Because the government has largely been unable to rebuild these schools, villagers are willing to provide the labor to rebuild, but have no money for the building supplies. Orphanages RHMI, in partnership with others, is building a small orphanage in south central Nepal. But the need is great to care for children in remote mountain villages that have lost both parents. These orphan children put a strain on communities that are barely surviving in their own right. As funds permit, RHMI would like to establish orphanages or care homes in communities where the need is most urgent. Sanitation in rural areas is very important to improving the health of villagers. RHMI offers programs that not only provides soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, but also teaches people how to use them. We also teach them about proper waste management and help build outdoor toilets. Children: Jesus Kitchen provides real and hot meals to homeless children, orphans, poor and slums children of the Himalayas. The meals we provide are the traditional Nepali basic meal of Chicken Dal Bhat (chicken, rice and vegetable). The kids love the fact that someone is taking an interest in them, listening to then, showing them love and compassion. Community Development: Living Water Well Project Since we started this project, we have been able to drill wells for desperately poor Dalit (untouchables) and slum communities, often ravaged by drought. These wells have become the lifeblood of the community as everyone is able to get safe, clean drinking water. There are still thousands of villages where wells are needed. Reach Himalaya Ministries has committed to drill at least 10 new wells this year. Adult Literacy Classes Our native missionaries provide Bible-based adult literacy programs. As villagers learn to read and write, they develop more self-confidence leading to increased self-development, thus, better ways to provide for their families. Awareness of health issues, better sanitation practices, creative activities, etc., become important to them. Women’s Empowerment program Women in the Himalayas routinely suffer from lack of access to education and income. Barely 25% of Nepali women are literate. They face systematic discrimination due to institutionalized chauvinism and a pronounced cultural preference for sons in Nepali society. The fundamental goal of Reach Himalaya Ministries Women’s Empowerment program is working with women to help them gain the confidence and skills to be leaders in their communities. Native Himalayan people are embracing the Gospel message of hope. Illiteracy is an epidemic in the Himalayan Region. Bible-based Adult Literacy classes are bringing hope of a brighter future to the poor in the Himalayas Health in rural areas Most of the places in the Himalayas are hard to reach where no dispensaries are available for sick and dying to get any sort of medical treatment. To get care, they have to walk for 5 to 10 days carrying the patient in their Nepali basket called DOKO on their backs by using a forehead strap. By the time they come all the way down to the nearest dispensaries where they can get some medical help, their lives are already precariously hanging by a thread. Health in rural areas are often unaffordable and ineffective - if it exists at all. Millions of people have never had a medical check-up. They've never taken a vitamin. When they have an accident, there's no hospital to go to. When they're sick, there's no medicine. Simple preventative diseases escalate into deadly problems. Treatable illnesses are ignored and become worse as a result. A broken leg, which should be easily fixed, can lead to a life as a cripple. A virus which would not usually harm healthy people can spread quickly through rural communities where the level of nutrition and health is not as high. These painful realities inspired us to organize mobile medical camps in communities lacking access to healthcare and sanitation. We provide free medication; distribute free vitamins and deworming tablets to women and children, improving their immune systems and strengthening their health. And also, in order to make a lasting difference, we don't only treat, but also educate in a local way. Learning how to prevent disease, maintain hygiene and get necessary nutrition empowers people to make healthy choices for years to come. Aid/Relief When disaster strikes, like the earthquakes of 2015, or the prolonged drought that affects part of the country, RHMI is there to provide emergency food, water and supplies in support of villages. We provide this support without regard to religious beliefs or practices. Every year as winter begins in the high Himalayas, RHMI provides warm clothing and blankets to needy people. Film Ministry is being developed to show videos to rural villagers on various humanitarian subjects. Religious videos are being shown in remote villages using mini-projectors run from solar charged batteries. RHM is preparing video courses to teach sanitation and learn about better health. Improving farming techniques is another video that we are researching. Economic Development: We refer to the programs offered here as “not just a handout, but a hand up.” The Livestock Program purchases cows, buffalo, and goats for rural families to milk. The milk is an important protein source to nourish their growing children. And when there is more milk than the family can use, they can sell it locally to provide a small source of income. These animals, and the pigs and chickens RHMI provides, are used to expand into small flocks and herds for another source of protein and income. This program can provide income for a poor family for years. Following Christ's example, RHMI seeks to provide farm animals where they are most needed in poor regions of South Asia. Take, for example, Maya’s family. RHMI provided several goats to them. For little Maya, those goats are very precious. She loves and cares for them. She is only in 5th grade. And one day she will get an education from the income they generate for her family. In another village, Native Missionary Lal Singh receive much needed income from his goats. With income from his goat farming he was able to fix his church’s roof. Now all of the parishioners are safe from the monsoon rains. A milking goat costs $120, a baby goat costs $90 or a milking cow costs $600. Dairy Farm RHMI has also provided milk cows and equipment to one church community to start a butter and cheese “factory.” Previously villagers had to carry their milk on their backs for 2 to 3 hours to sell their milk. Now they are all wanting to take it to our plant. And they love the local butter and cheese that they can buy back. Our plant is very small but it must expand to meet the demand. The plant was started in the first part of 2016 and is already turning a small profit that is being reinvested in the community. It is success stories like this that RHMI would like to replicate in other suitable communities as funds allow. Sewing Machines Bringing HOPE to Women and restoring their dignity. Providing an income generation opportunity for remote and rural under privileged people of the Himalayas and to give a desperate chance to escape from poverty helping to empower women and young girls to come out of sex trafficking trade through the purchase of a sewing machine. The sex trafficking trade is big business where girls from Nepal are taken into India for forced prostitution. It is perhaps one of the busiest slave trafficking routes anywhere in the world, with an estimated 5,000 to 10,000 Nepali women trafficked across the border every year and an estimated 100,000 to 200,000 Nepali trafficked persons still in India. Sewing is not just a hobby; it is an opportunity to earn a livelihood for their family. The gift of sewing machine can quickly reverse the effects of poverty and prevent them from being sold into sex trafficking. With a gift of a sewing machine that costs $160, these women can generate an income for their families. They gain dignity and status in the community, a brighter future for their families, and for many, within one generation, the cycle of poverty is broken. Testimony: "I want to thank [those] who made my dream come true with this sewing machine." - Anita Praja Gift of $150: Sponsor $150 - tuition for the 6-month tailoring course! Women's lives are dramatically changed by this program, as they learn new skills that allow them to provide for their families. Gift of $500 per month: Provides full support of a Tailoring Centre to include the tuition and support of 20 students! One-time gift of $1100: will fully fund the set-up of a Tailoring Centre.
