Mission Statement

The Small World Initiative is an innovative program that inspires and retains students in the sciences while addressing one of the most pressing global health challenges – the diminishing supply of effective antibiotics. It centers around an introductory biology course in which students perform hands-on field and laboratory research on soil samples in the hunt for new antibiotics.

About This Cause

Formulated at Yale University in 2012 by Dr. Jo Handelsman, the Small World Initiative is an innovative program that inspires and retains students in the sciences while addressing one of the most pressing global health challenges – the diminishing supply of effective antibiotics. It centers around an introductory biology course in which students perform hands-on field and laboratory research on soil samples in the hunt for new antibiotics. This is particularly relevant as over two thirds of antibiotics come from soil bacteria. Thanks to our impact on students and potential to crowdsource antibiotic discovery, our program has grown rapidly to include 180 undergraduate institutions and high schools in 35 US states, Puerto Rico, and 12 countries. Each year, we train instructors at new institutions to expand our program, and we are working to establish a chemical hub to advance promising candidates into the drug discovery pipeline.
