About This Cause
American Initiative for Health and Wellness in Africa (AIHWA) is a multinational non-profit 501(c)3 organization with federal tax ID- EIN # 81-1879005. AIHWA has field offices and an integrated medical clinic in Nigeria as it strives to improve healthcare in Africa through its special areas of interest: 1) Patient Prisoner Program. This refers to poor patients detained in hospitals in Africa due to their inability to pay medical bills. AIHWA partners with several evaluated local hospitals where these patients are held hostage to provide advocacy, financial support, and release for the patients. 2) Medical Missions: Our missions bring internationally trained physicians, mental health, and social work counselors to Africa for both short-term and long-term provisions of quality integrated healthcare. So far, our missions in Africa have impacted over five thousand people since 2017. 3) Counseling/Mental Health. This area in Africa has a large gap between the need and delivery of services. AIHWA’s objectives have culminated in developing and establishing a behavioral and counseling department at the aihwa Hope Center in Nigeria. 4) AIHWA Vision Care. Approximately 26.3 million people in the African Region have a form of visual impairment. Of these, 20.4 million have low vision and 5.9 million are estimated to be blind. It is estimated that 15.3% of the world's blind population resides in Africa where poverty has significantly prevented most people from accessing quality care in this regard. Some of these major eye conditions have been identified among several patients at the AIHWA’s medical clinic. These conditions include cataracts, uncorrected refractive errors, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, corneal opacities, diabetic retinopathy, trachoma, and onchocerciasis. AIHWA has, therefore, taken a significant step to intervene with the establishment of aihwa Vision Care located at the aihwa medical clinic in Nigeria. aihwa Vision Care runs a complete eye clinic with different eye care specialists. Our mission to restore the sight of many poor patients who could have become blind has continued to make a difference in the lives of many people in Nigeria.
