Mission Statement

EarthSpark's mission: eradicate energy poverty. Our method: do the research and development on business models that can spin off and scale to address specific aspects of energy poverty with a focus on what can work in Haiti.

About This Cause

So far, we have spun off Enèji Pwòp, S.A., a Haitian electric utility operating EarthSpark's 2 microgrids in Haiti, and SparkMeter, Inc., a smart meter technology company now serving microgrid utilities in 32 countries. We have also built a first-of-its-kind, town-sized, solar-powered, smart grid in rural Haiti. Our second grid pushed the regulatory framework in the country to formally acknowledge privately operated community microgrids. Where there is no incumbent infrastructure, there is an opportunity to build energy systems that use today's technologies, business models, and community participation to deliver clean, affordable, reliable electricity. The Haitian countryside is full of potential, yet one thing holding rural Haiti back is a lack of affordable, reliable electricity. EarthSpark International, with its Haitian social enterprise partner, Enèji Pwòp, S.A., are proposing to bring high-quality energy services to communities across Haiti’s southern peninsula. Working in the South Department since 2009, EarthSpark established a first-of-its-kind community-scale solar-powered smart grid in the town of Les Anglais. The pilot grid was launched in 2012 and expanded in 2015 to serve all of downtown Les Anglais. Now, two microgrids are serving over 5000 people with reliable 24/7 grid electricity. Those connected to EarthSpark's microgrids are not only enjoying safe, clean, convenient energy, but they were seeing savings of 50-80% over what they had previously been spending on kerosene, candles, and diesel generators. Designed as high-quality infrastructure, an EarthSpark grid is powerful enough to energize industry yet progressive enough to serve every single household within its footprint. Building on its experience, EarthSpark is partnering with municipalities in the Sud, Grand Anse, Nippes and Sud Est Departments to bring reliable grid electricity to 24 towns in the next 5 years.
