The mission of Look What SHE Did! is to inspire women and girls to greatness by bringing to light stories of remarkable women who have changed the world
About This Cause
Our mission is to inspire women and girls to greatness by bringing to light stories of remarkable women who have changed the world; we do this by creating short-format videos and live events featuring female storytellers celebrating women who inspire them We freely offer our library of inspirational stories online to be viewed, shared, discussed and enjoyed again and again. Our hope is to challenge and transform the dominant cultural narrative that women are inferior to men by amplifying stories of female greatness. We do this so the lives of these women-- heroes, geniuses, and leaders-- enter the public consciousness and become familiar models for current future generations to look up to. Look What SHE Did! encourages our female storytellers to choose subjects who are personally meaningful to them, creating a natural enthusiasm which is felt on camera and allows the story to land with more impact. They are invited to propose their own story subject or choose from our extensive list of astonishing women, which includes contributions from supporters from all over the world. Additionally, we work with storytellers to create interactive screenings of their video at a venue in their home community. At these events, the storyteller, director and other members of the production team speak about the work in a facilitated discussion following the video screening. Community members are invited to attend at no charge and encouraged to join the discussion through commentary and questions, and by sharing stories of the women who have inspired their lives. A key choice in the creative format of the videos is the fact that they are never more than 5 minutes in length, making them unusually accessible and easily consumed. The power of these short films resides in seeing the storyteller move beyond biographical preparation and intellectual assumptions; as the story is told, the storyteller not only creates a vivid portrait of her subject, she also reveals aspects of herself. It is the meeting of storyteller and story, and it is what makes Look What SHE Did! videos not only unique, but joyful. We believe an upbeat, conversational approach allows for a greater connection to viewers, that in turn leads to productive changes in public consciousness across the political divides. We are reclaiming HERtory, one woman at a time.
