Mission Statement
To work alongside community members of Cite Soleil to strengthen Cite Soleil Haiti’s youth through inspiration, empowerment, and community.
About This Cause
Cite Soleil is known to be one of the poorest and most dangerous cities in the entire world. Every day thousands of kids living in the region wake up unaware of when or where their next meal will come from, and unfortunately some of these same kids won’t have a place to call home. This type of poverty often prohibits children, teens and young adults from important activities such as school, personal hobbies, and simply being a kid. With nowhere to turn, many run to join gangs, which promote violence. By providing kids the opportunity and an optimistic outlook of the future, we can promote the important aspects in life including education, athletics, service, and community. Sprint to Cite Soleil was founded by high school sophomores, Sam Shapiro and Jack Moe. For their first Sprint, the Sprint to Cite Soleil organization has partnered with a small basketball program in Cite Soleil. With the help of donations from our supporters, we have given the basketball program stability and the resources to increase the number of children it serves. Nearly 200 children currently attend our weekly basketball clinics, giving them a place to go after school and stay off the streets and away from the gangs. We also provide each child a weekly meal, which is sometimes their only meal that day. With your help we can continue to grow our basketball program, increase the number of meals we serve each child per week and expand into other program offerings.
