Mission Statement
The Latino cancer crisis is here. A perfect storm of exploding population, voids in scientific research, and lack of knowledge sharing among agencies will cost lives and damage the quality of life for those affected—and their families. Cancer is the #1 cause of death for Latinos and will rise by 142% by 2029 according to the MD Anderson Cancer Center. To serve the largest ethnic population in the U.S., collective action must be taken. The Latino Cancer Institute will meet these challenges head-on by applying a Science Meets Service framework: 1. Connecting agencies to share knowledge and best practices, and identify key issues to address 2. Convening events for stakeholders in the cancer landscape, including cancer researchers, providers and community, to connect and collaborate 3. Advocating at a state and national level to raise awareness of Latino cancer issues, promote policy, and attract major funding bodies to invest in change
About This Cause
Although the Latino community is not homogeneous and spans the Americas, national action is necessary to create a health family that will be more than the sum of its member organizations. The Latino Cancer Institutes engages stakeholders from various sectors to join the Latino community in turning a spotlight on pressing cancer issues and identifying strategies to address barriers to quality and equal care. For Latino cancer serving agencies the LCI helps them come out of isolation to share best practices and connect with researchers, funders and policy champions. For researchers the LCI provides an opportunity for scientists to collaborate with peers, learn about new scientific trends that will inform their work, and connect with communities to translate research into action. For funders LCI allows them the opportunity to invest in a population in need and ease the economic and social burden caused by cancer For the Latino community, the LCI, works through its stakeholders - addressing among other factors, social and environmental determinants of health- to improve access to education and care, as well as the fruits of medical research.
