Mission Statement

The mission of Bees in the D is to create a cooperative effort between residents, schools, organizations, and businesses in the city of Detroit and Southeast Michigan to contribute to both the health of honey bee colonies and the education of their importance to our environment.

About This Cause

Bees in the D - URBAN BEEKEEPING IN DETROIT. Throughout history bees have been a symbol of prosperity, success, rebirth and resurrection that we feel mirrors the spirit of Detroit beautifully. The city of Detroit is becoming known for its arts, technology, and as a leader in urban gardening and agrihoods. Honey bees not only benefit Detroit’s communities, but agriculture as a whole. Honey bees and an urban environment can have a symbiotic relationship. There are many open green spaces and gardens throughout the city and the honey bees will travel up to a few miles from its hive to visit them. We see amazing potential with empty spaces like rooftops, balconies, and vacant lots. These are areas that are, for the most part, being unused and perfect areas to place our hives. With the abundance of urban gardens and green spaces, it made us realize the vital role honey bees serve as residents of Detroit. Bees in the D has gone from caring for 6 hives in 2016 to 29 hives in 2017. That's about 1.5 million honey bees! We project to have over 50 hives in 2018. We combine our passion for teaching with a flair to organize and host community events like honey harvests, classes on the basics of beekeeping, interactive children’s learning events, and speaking engagements about honey bees, pollinators, and gardening. Businesses are also seeing the importance of being "green" and sustainable by building green roofs, community gardens, and yes, fostering urban beekeeping. We have installations of honey bee hives on Cobo Center's green roof and partnerships with GM, Bedrock, Detroit Abloom, The Garden Detroit, and the Michigan Urban Farming Initiative. The local, raw honey from our hives has been featured in both food and beverages at bars and restaurants around the city. Jars of Bees in the D honey have been donated to other charities and small businesses for fundraisers and giveaways to benefit Detroit communities.
