Mission Statement

We partner to serve and transform impoverished communities through education, health, employment, and the gospel.

About This Cause

We began to serve cities in poverty 20 years ago when Mike Fechner, a pastor from North Dallas, and Velma Mitchell, a Christian single mother in the inner city of Dallas decided to make a difference. Their resolve to invest their lives in others took place after Velma's son was killed in a drive by shooting. We branched off from the Dallas organization and began serving in San Antonio over ten years ago and are a 501c3 with the same purpose of changing lives and communities. Our organization works to transform urban communities through a multifaceted approach: 1. Faith is important so we share the gospel and do good deeds. 2. We provide educational support to the children of the neighborhood by helping them with homework and tutoring in a school-year Out of School Time (OST) program and through reading and writing activities in an OST summer program. Both of the programs also provide computer experience for the children and fitness activities. Children are served snacks or meals during each program. The children are offered the opportunity to attend a free week-long summer camp. 3. We provide family support by working with the women of the community in weekly fellowship gatherings where character-building, budgeting, parenting, and other skills are taught and encouraged. 4. At least 15 times a year we work through the entire community in neighborhood-wide events where the families are brought together for a simple meal, music, games for the children and special items such as school supplies and Christmas gifts as the season dictates. We also have special events in May to honor the women/mothers in the neighborhood. In June, we have a similar activity to honor the men/fathers. During most of these events, free eye examinations are offered. We are in the early stages of a partnership with a medical clinic to provide female health services. 5. We employ residents to help in our work. We also assist residents with resume and job preparation. 6. We seek to develop long-term relationships with the residents in order to facilitate the mentoring and other training events. 7. We have developed a neighborhood visitation program which enables us to meet new residents and to let them know about the various programs that we offer and other services available in the community. 8. We coordinate with other non-profits in the neighborhood and throughout the city including, but not limited to, SA Heals, the San Antonio Food Bank, Children's Hunger Fund, and Excel Beyond the Bell, 9.In addition to volunteer opportunities with our ongoing services, we coordinate event driven volunteer opportunities with churches, businesses, schools, etc. to provide service opportunities to clean up the neighborhood, repair homes, sponsor field trips, and youth activity days.
