Mission Statement
HYA exists to meet youth experiencing homelessness where they are and to help them build healthier lives. We believe that reducing harm is possible through the provision of accessible, non-judgmental outreach, one-on-one counseling, and medical and mental health care, as well as creative and educational workshops, syringe access and disposal, and accurate up-to-date referrals and information. We strive to empower young people experiencing homelessness to protect themselves, educate each other, reduce harm within the community, and, when they are ready, transition off the streets.
About This Cause
Homeless Youth Alliance provides case management, medical and mental health services to young people aged 13-29 who are experiencing homelessness or extreme housing insecurity in San Francisco, particularly in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. Five days per week, we operate drop-in sites where we provide food, drinks, warm clothes, clean socks and underwear, sleeping bags / blankets, hygiene products, harm-reduction supplies such as the overdose-reversal drug Narcan (naloxone), and other essentials, all free of charge. Additionally, we offer free mental health and medical services with licensed professionals, as well as one-on-one case management, through which we are able to provide referrals to additional services, such as housing programs. Having been in existence for roughly two decades, Homeless Youth Alliance was founded by and for young people experiencing homelessness in San Francisco. To this day, all of our front-line staff have lived experience of homelessness themselves, giving them knowledge, experience, and legitimacy that no amount of education or on-the-job training ever could replicate. In fact, many Homeless Youth Alliance participants have become HYA outreach counselors before moving on to successful careers in a variety of fields.
