COUNTY ROADS RESCUE

JACKSONVILLE, Texas, 75766-2800 United States

Mission Statement

To assist Cherokee County with the rescue, rehabilitation and placement of the hundreds of forgotten and abandoned strays that roam the area. We also assist local shelters by relieving them when they reach capacity, either by rescue through our program or assistance in networking with our partners. We educate the public and provide assistance where needed within Cherokee County to benefit the lives of companion animals. Since opening in 2016 we’ve rescued thousands of animals, with about 80% being from Cherokee County.

About This Cause

County Roads Rescue is a 501c3 that was started in May of 2016 with the focus of helping Cherokee County’s large animal overpopulation issue. We fully vetted the animals that come into our system and transfer them to the multiple rescue partners we have in northern states, such as Wisconsin, Nebraska, New Jersey and Washington. These other states have strict spay and neuter laws preventing unwanted litters, and require registration of pets preventing animals from taking up unnecessary space in shelters and creating higher success rates of reuniting lost animals with their owners quickly. Because of these reasons, these states have adopters on waiting lists that gladly accept our animals after we vet and behaviorally assess them to appropriately place them with their perfect family. While we still attempt local adoptions, the majority of our animals will leave through our transport program. This also guarantees they do not circulate back into our system, keeping room open for the next animal in need. However, when we send animals out of state we lose the opportunity to take in adoption fees, which is why community support and donations are so important for us. In order for our partnerships to work we have to cover all costs associated with rescuing and vetting an animal, including spay/neuter, heartworm tests and treatment, fecal exams, wellness exams, preventatives, vaccines (two to three rounds) and health certificates so they can cross state lines. Costs can be much higher for animals that come to us in poor health. We also cover all food, supplies, enrichment items, some training and boarding if necessary, our transportations costs and overhead at our facility. We’ve begun working a few extra programs to assist the community such as TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release for feral cat colonies that are rampant in our area) and occasionally we’re able to help those in need of cat and dog food. During the winter we give away dog houses and straw for dogs that live outside during freezing conditions. We really hope to see these programs grow in the future. To date we’ve relied solely on volunteers and donations. We have no outside funding, but we’re reaching out to new sources for help. We are always in need of supplies such as paper towels, bleach, laundry detergent, blue dawn dish soap, dog and cat food, leashes, collars, toys and cat litter. We greatly appreciate any assistance offered and we thank you for taking an interest in our rescue mission!
