Third Ear Theater Co. is dedicated to developing and presenting the experimental work of Jerry Lieblich. With imagination and wit, curiosity and compassion, our work explores the relationship between language and consciousness — speaking differently, we seek to make a space for different thought.
About This Cause
Third Ear Theater Co. is an experimental theater company based in New York City. It is dedicated to developing and presenting the work of Jerry Lieblich. Below is Jerry's artist statement: I write plays to think differently. I pay attention to how language and thought interact, how changing one invites change in the other. I’m interested in what language can do in a theater that it doesn’t do in ordinary life. I’m interested in fundamental levels of perception and thinking: the thoughts we use to think, the systems we use to see. I like what happens when minds turn sideways, and openings appear. I believe there is radical possibility in such rearranging of thought: one becomes tapped into one’s deeper self, the sources of awareness. Awareness of awareness is, I believe, an Archimedean lever from which to begin to - slowly, small-ly, hyper-locally, internally - bring change into the world. With each play I write, I feel a little lighter, a little more present, a little more able to attend and give care. My plays tend to oscillate between hyper-dense and hyper-sparse. They tend to be very funny. They tend to open up imagination, interior space. They aspire to give each audience member space for a private, particular experience - an awareness of awareness. Which is to say, they are against the authority of “correct” interpretations. They are, instead, open fields or dense woods, invitations to contemplation, bewilderment, pleasure, and creative, participatory perception. Third Ear is the company I’ve made to help me make this work. I work with a variety of people I admire. Sometimes I direct my own plays, sometimes other people direct them. Every process is different, very little is codified. I like it that way.
