Mission Statement

The purpose of the Institute for Anarchist Studies will be to promote scholarship, popular writing and cultural works on anarchism that is generally pertinent to the project of creating a cooperative, egalitarian, and ecological society. The Institute for Anarchist Studies will award grants, on a competitive basis, to culture makers writing and creating on these themes; grants are awarded annually if funding allows. Grants will be awarded on the basis of the relevance of the proposed project to the aforementioned concerns. The Institute for Anarchist Studies will also publish books, a journal, and other literature in furtherance of these goals.

About This Cause

The Institute for Anarchist Studies (IAS), established in 1996 to support the development of anarchism, is a grant-giving organization for radical writers, thinkers, and culture makers (podcasts, audio-visual, etc). To date, we have funded over a hundred projects by creators from countries around the world. Equally important, we publish two series of books in collaboration with AK Press; the print and online journal Perspectives on Anarchist Theory; and the Lexicon pamphlet series. We organize educational events such as Anarchist Theory Tracks, maintain a speakers bureau, and have organized events like the Renewing the Anarchist Tradition conference. The IAS is part of a larger movement to radically transform society. The IAS has a small working board with board members from across the US, and a part time staff person. The IAS is internally democratic and works in solidarity with people around the globe who share our values.
