About This Cause
New Roots Haiti is dedicated to empowering parents to care for the needs of their families through employment, education, and nutrition assistance. We operate an educational farm in Northern Haiti where we raise all of our animals on pasture. We sell our products to individuals, businesses, restaurants, hotels, and hospitals in the Cap Haitian area. The profits from these sales are used to help us run our programs. Our first program is an internship where men and women from our local community can spend 6 months learning the ins and outs of the pasture poultry model. During this time they will have practical hands on experiences such as caring directly for the animals, butchering, etc. They will also go through an intensive educational course where they will learn business management, money management, animal husbandry, the pastured poultry model, and family health. Once their internship is finished, if they pass a set of expectations, they will receive a business package which includes a movable chicken coop (called a chicken tractor), 50 chicks, and 2 bags of feed. This package will allow them to start their own small business which will set their family on a pathway out of poverty. Our second program is Family Health Classes. We will work with pregnant moms from our community to help them obtain the resources and skills needed to help their children reach their full potential. We will focus on the first 1000 days of a childs life, starting at conception and going through their 2nd birthday. During this time is when the most brain development occurs and if the child is undernourished they may experience stunting that will have a negative impact on the rest of their lives. From the time the mother enters our program until her child is 8 months old, she will receive a supplemental breakfast of eggs (which are grown on our farm). Ensuring the Mother is healthy while she is pregnant and breastfeeding will have a direct positive effect on her child. After that point, the program will shift and the child will be the one receiving the supplemental breakfast. While in our program, the mother will be taught many family health topics, such as nutrition, family planning, breast feeding, first aid, hygiene, etc. She will also learn about money management. Through these programs we hope to set families on a pathway out of poverty. We believe that the solution to generational poverty is not aid but instead trade. We want to boost the economy in our small village of Chiron by creating lasting meaningful jobs. Through this we should see a ripple effect that will have a positive benefit on everyone in our community and surrounding villages as well. Our internship program will help many people start small businesses allowing them to provide for their families. With a steady source of income, they will be able to provide their families with nutritious meals, medical care, education, and safe housing. These families will no longer need to turn to others for help, but will be able to meet these needs on their own, and in doing so will only add to the economy we are attempting to stimulate. Our family health classes will come along side parents during the most critical stage of their child's lives to ensure that they have the resources and means needed for their child to reach their full potential. Our goal is to see less malnutrition in our community as well as healthier children and families. The specific method that we use to farm our animals (raising them on pasture) will help revitalize farm land all around us. The Cap Haitien Valley is some of the most fertile area in all of Haiti, yet we are surrounded by malnutrition. The large majority of farm land in our area is used for growing sugar cane which is then turned into moonshine for small profit margins. Due to decades of lack of crop rotation and over grazing, the land has been depleted of essential nutrients. As we teach out interns how to properly raise their animals on these lands, the natural fertilizer that is left behind will add the missing elements needed to raise healthy animals. We should no longer see pigs, cows, and horses that are skin and bone, but healthy plump animals, providing a higher yield for the farmers. In addition, it is very hard to purchase chicken and eggs in our rural markets. Our interns will be adding a much needed nutrient to the market, allowing local families the opportunity to feed their families a healthier diet. We want to help end generational poverty in our community by not providing hand outs but hand ups. We believe by addressing these needs we will not just ask our community what we can do FOR them, but what we can do WITH them. Employment is a longer harder road, but it provides much greater success at the end.
