Mission Statement
Friends of Wake County Animal Center is dedicated to improving the quality of life for animals in our community and their human families. Through our fundraising efforts, we provide access to vital medical care, boarding and placement for shelter animals in need, thereby improving their health and reducing euthanasia rates at the center. We also promote adoption, safety and responsible pet ownership via education and public outreach. We provide support to local rescues, animal shelters and adopters to help diminish the number of homeless animals. In 2018 we launched a low cost spay/neuter program to help reduce the amount of unwanted animals coming into our local shelter. We are an all volunteer 501(c)(3) non profit organization.
About This Cause
Friends of Wake County Animal Center is a Volunteer run organization that provides support to the Wake County community through several programs and projects. As new community needs arise, we assess if we can provide support. For example, in March 2020 at the start of the pandemic we saw that many local families and individuals with pets could not afford pet food. We created a No Empty Bowl project intended to supply food on a temporary basis until these folks were able to secure other jobs and support their pets without our help. The economy has not improved since then so we continue to run our No Empty Bowl project through various people food pantries and direct community outreach into underserved communities. To reduce the number of animals brought into the local shelter who could possibly be euthanized, we attacked the root cause - unaffordable spay neuter resources. We offer 2 low cost spay and neuter vouchers without requiring income verification. Our $5 Kitty Clip program is for owned and feral cats of Wake County residents. Our $25 Pit Stop program is for Pit Bull and Pit Bull mix dogs of Wake County residents. We also offer $350 sponsorships for heartworm treatment for dogs adopted from the Wake County Animal Center to assist new owners. We offer financial support to other rescues who pull animals not eligible for floor adoption at the Wake County Animal Center. These animals require additional medical care or training that the local shelter can not provide. We work very closely with other local nonprofits, partnering on events and sponsorships to ensure that animals in Wake County are well cared for. We have collaborated on community spay neuter days to impact the number of unwanted animals. We rely on our community and other generous individuals to provide the funding so that we can continue our work in our community. We are fortunate to have an all volunteer Board and many dedicated volunteers who devote numerous hours to ensure our work can continue.
