Mission Statement

Artolution is an international nonprofit organization that uses collaborative public art to drive positive social change, build community, and foster healing in crisis-affected communities. Founded on the belief that art is a powerful tool for connection and transformation, Artolution brings together youth, families, educators, and local artists to co-create large-scale murals, sculptures, and digital art that reflect shared stories and local challenges. Our work is rooted in inclusivity, empathy, and participation. We work across some of the world’s most vulnerable settings—from refugee camps and urban slums to post-conflict zones and underserved neighborhoods—empowering communities through year-round programming focused on: • Mental health and trauma recovery through creative expression • Youth empowerment and leadership development • Social inclusion and cross-cultural dialogue • Gender equality and women’s voices • Education in emergencies and community-based learning Our initiatives are led by local artists and teaching fellows who are trained and supported to deliver sustainable, high-impact arts programming in their own communities. We believe in shifting power to those with lived experience and amplifying the voices of people often left out of global conversations. Artolution is also a pioneer in blending art and technology through immersive platforms like Virtual Bridges, which uses virtual reality and augmented reality to connect displaced youth across borders and transform public spaces into interactive, community-owned experiences. To date, Artolution has impacted tens of thousands of lives in over 35 countries, with long-term programs in Jordan, Uganda, Colombia, Bangladesh, and the United States. We’ve partnered with global organizations like UNICEF, UNHCR, and GIZ, and collaborated with schools, shelters, hospitals, and grassroots networks to ensure that creativity and healing reach those who need it most. Our vision is a world where every community has the tools to tell its own story, transform public space, and turn creativity into resilience.

About This Cause

Artolution is a global community-based public art organization rooted in participatory and collaborative art-making. We believe that creativity is a powerful force for social change—one that can bring communities together across lines of conflict, trauma, and exclusion. Our mission is to empower artists, youth, and community members to become agents of transformation through the co-creation of meaningful public art. Whether through a large-scale mural in a refugee camp, a sculpture in a conflict-affected community, or a youth-led theater performance in an underserved neighborhood, every Artolution project is built on inclusion, dialogue, and collective storytelling. We work with people who have experienced displacement, violence, and marginalization—including refugees, incarcerated individuals, street-involved youth, those with mental or physical disabilities, and young people in areas of conflict and extreme poverty. Our participants use art to address shared challenges, elevate their voices, and build bonds across divisions. Artolution’s reach spans over 30 countries across Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, North America, Europe, South Asia, and Australasia. We implement long-term programs and local artist training in countries such as Jordan, Uganda, Colombia, Bangladesh, and the United States, often in partnership with schools, grassroots organizations, refugee camps, international institutions, and global agencies like UNICEF and UNHCR. Our multidisciplinary approach includes: • Visual Public Art – Murals, community sculpture, and painting workshops • Performing Arts – Participatory theatre, dance, music, and storytelling • XR & Digital Arts – Virtual reality and augmented reality experiences through our Virtual Bridges initiative • Community Dialogue – Workshops that invite reflection, shared visioning, and healing In every project, community members collectively decide the theme and message of their artwork—allowing them to explore critical social issues such as gender equity, education, mental health, conflict resolution, and environmental resilience. This collaborative process not only results in powerful works of public art, but also strengthens local relationships, promotes cross-cultural understanding, and fosters long-term emotional resilience. Artolution was born out of grassroots efforts. In 2009, artist and educator Max Frieder began leading participatory mural projects in communities experiencing hardship and displacement. Around the same time, Joel Bergner (aka Joel Artista) was facilitating street art projects with communities worldwide. After years of collaboration, Max and Joel co-founded Artolution in 2015 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to creative empowerment on a global scale. Today, Artolution continues to grow as a network of local artists, educators, and changemakers who lead creative initiatives from within their own communities. Together, we imagine a more inclusive, connected, and compassionate world—one brushstroke, dance step, or sculpted symbol at a time.
