Mission Statement
The Chicago Latino Theater Alliance (CLATA) is committed to enticing, fostering and showcasing new thought provoking works of emerging Latino playwrights, while preserving and promoting the best works of classic and contemporary artists, to inspire a cross-cultural audience. CLATA works to showcase existing and new thought provoking U.S. Latino playwrights, actors and directors primarily in Chicago, along with national and international counterparts. CLATA strives to preserve cultural heritage and serve as a conduit to promote and identify new and exciting works. Our goals are to create a permanent home for Chicago’s Latino theater groups and companies. To create the country’s leading international Latino theater festival with an emphasis on showcasing local Latino theater artists and companies. CLATA also aims to provide technical and professional support for Chicago’s Latino theater groups and companies.
About This Cause
The Chicago Latino Theater Alliance (CLATA) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization founded in September 2016 by three prominent and longstanding Latino cultural institutions in Chicago: the National Museum of Mexican Art (NMMA), the International Latino Cultural Center (ILCC), and the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance (PRAA). This partnership organically evolved from the growing need to identify, nurture and create a space for Chicago's first-voice Latino theater artists and collectives. The alliance of these organizations is a unique cultural model that demonstrates a commitment to collectively bring resources, expertise, relationships and audiences together to form a transformative cultural engine. CLATA is dedicated to help drive the local Latino theater community to a more prominent level, and to shape Chicago’s cultural landscape by strengthening its diversity through the intersectionality of American theater. CLATA works year-round to support local Latino theater artists through the advocacy of their work, technical and financial support, augmenting and diversifying audiences, forging collaborations, bridging access to foundations and benefactors, and annually producing Destinos-- one of the country’s leading international Latino theater festivals. Destinos provides a safe space to explore ideas, examine humanity, and immerse audiences to cultivate a deeper understanding of Latino histories. Destinos amplifies and celebrates first-voice Latino narratives and experiences of divergent cultural, socio-economic and political degrees to enrich audiences through exchanges of varied perspectives. In order to provide Latino youth and theater artists sustainable support, CLATA is working on establishing a permanent space that would permit year-round programming, showcase Destinos festival, and serve as an incubator for Latino youth and theater artists to call home.
