Mission Statement

SHIFT aims to build a community where teen involvement creates, encourages, & provides opportunities to develop to their full potential.

About This Cause

SHIFT began after two young men in our community took their lives. Sitting at their funerals, I had to ask myself “what can we do as a community?” I wondered what we could do to let teens know that troublesome situations are only temporary, that it can, will, and DOES get better. Teens are only teens for a short time, and then they have the opportunity to make their life anything they dream it will be. I contacted other concerned adults and together, we started SHIFT. Despite the fact that suicides that shook our community led to SHIFT’s creation, SHIFT is not a specifically suicide-focused organization. Instead, it is about how to make the lives of teens easier, safer, better. SHIFT is about showing the teens in our community that we care, and that the community is here for them. We have our monthly events to give the teens something to do every single month, a place to meet new people, to see that other teens have the same thoughts and feelings they do… we want them to know that they are not alone. SHIFT aims to make sure that teens get to have fun and hang out, but that doesn’t mean we are only about that. We love to make sure teens can have fun, can hang out, but it goes so much deeper than that. We want teens learning that they are unique, that they’re special. They’re here and they can do anything they set their mind to. If that means they can go to college someday and become a doctor that saves lives, one that’s happy, then that’s what it means. If it means that they choose not to go to college but to go into a different career that makes them happy, then that’s what it means there, too. We want to make sure that teens know that no matter what route they take in life, they have the power to be successful and happy. We want teens to be who they are, to grow into the people they dream of being, rather than fit into a box that society has for them. In addition to events, SHIFT offers many classes. We’ve offered things like self-defense, anti-bullying, car repairs, classes on skin care and taking care of yourself. In the future, we’d also love to cover topics like personal finance, personal tasks like healthy, simple cooking or sewing, like how to sew on a button or iron a shirt. We’d love to help teach teens life skills that can help them have their everyday needs met. But it goes even further than that. We want to teach teens the harmful effects of vaping, smoking, drinking, and drugs on their minds and bodies. We want to teach them about building a positive body image, support the teens who are struggling with eating disorders or self-harm. We would love to offer support groups for the parents of teens in our community who are hurting. We want to have classes and support groups so teens know that it’s going to be okay. Teens are very critical of themselves, but we want to flip the script and lets change the self-talk they have from negative to positive. So, is SHIFT about suicide? Yes, but SHIFT is about so much more. The next time you see a flyer for a fun teen event-- an event that is free for teens in 6th through 12th grades who live in the Spring Hill area-- we want you to think about what we stand for, all of the things that we aim to do for the teens, instead of seeing it as just an ordinary night out. Someday, we would love to have a building where we can do even more for the teens in this community, but for now, we are making the most of what we have and meeting as often as possible with fun events, classes, workshops, and support. We want to show teens every single month that they are special, and that the Spring Hill community cares about them. We will build on the time we are able to spend with them, the things we are able to offer, as we have the means to do so.
