Mission Statement
The Beis is an intentional, inclusive, innovative religious Jewish community that provides a home for those looking to explore, to connect, and to be inspired.
About This Cause
The Beis is a growing community of Jews in Washington Heights who are looking for somewhere that feels like home (Beis is Hebrew for 'home'). We gather for meaningful prayer, thought-provoking study, mouth-watering meals, and other spirited occasions. We do something exciting and innovative for all of the Jewish holidays, and we also meet every Friday night to welcome in Shabbat and Shabbat morning for prayer, Torah study, and kidush. We are also happy to host individuals for Shabbat meals any week, to study Torah anytime, and to talk about Jewish life and life in the Heights whenever. Our prayer and many of of our gatherings and programs happen at 587 Ft Washington Ave (right side door), but many others happen around the neighborhood - in people's apartments, on rooftops, and on street corners. We try and make everything we do intentional, meaningful, and accessible to all. It's also a very grassroots, community-led community - so if there's something you want to see, or some way you'd like the community gatherings to adapt, we'd be happy to get you on board. Some of the people who come are looking for traditional, religious Judaism, but many don't fit into any one box and we welcome anyone who's looking to learn more, or looking for a home. The ages of people who come range from 1 week to 100 years, though most are young or young-at-heart. We've been organizing community in the Heights since 2012, but re-organized into the Beis Community in the summer of 2014, and moved to our current location in summer of 2016. We're part of a growing network of inclusive, intentional, innovative religious communities, piloting the OU's Young Professional network, and working with Hazon, and with committed young Jews across America.
