Mission Statement

Dignity Matters’ mission is to assist women and girls who are homeless or living in poverty by providing a reliable supply of monthly menstrual care products and underwear. We help women safely manage their periods, regain confidence, and participate fully in their lives.

About This Cause

Our vision is a world where ALL women can manage their period with dignity. Menstrual care is expensive, needed every month, rarely donated, and can't be purchased using SNAP and WIC benefits – the most significant source of government support for women and families in need. 1 in 4 students in the US misses school because their families can't access menstrual care, and 1 in 3 women working in low-wage, hourly positions miss work and risk losing their jobs because they can't afford these items. Dignity Matters provides free menstrual care to 15,000 women and girls each month through a diverse network of 170 shelters, public schools, food pantries and clinics in Massachusetts. We are the largest organization in the state focused solely on providing free menstrual care, and the only reliable source of these items for most of the women we serve. Lack of access to menstrual care is a “deal breaker:" regardless of the other resources available to them, women and girls cannot stay healthy, work or attend school without reliable access to menstrual care. What Makes Us Unique A manufacturing contract lets us provide a month of menstrual care for 25% of average retail cost, allowing us to serve 4 times as many women. A contract for the wholesale purchase of underwear lets us provide 6 pairs (a one-year supply) for 50% of retail cost. We distribute to a network of non-profits that already serve and have the trust of women and girls who are homeless or living in poverty. We make a 12-month commitment to each partner so the women and organizations know they can count on us for these products when they need them. Our Programs Dignity at Schools provides free menstrual care and undergarments to students at public middle and high schools, after-school programs, state universities, and community colleges in Massachusetts. Dignity at Shelters provides menstrual care, bras and underwear to women at homeless and domestic violence shelters, low-income housing community centers, and emergency family centers. Dignity in the Community delivers menstrual care and incontinence underwear to women and girls through 26 large food pantries and medical centers throughout Greater Boston. Dignity Beneath the Blouse offers free bra fittings and bras to sheltered women.
