Mission Statement
S.n.a.p.p.! (Strength, Navigate, Advocacy, Purpose, Perseverance) is a prevention program that combines community, connection, mentorship and the power of information to stand against life’s adversities in our youth’s world. Snapp!’s mission is to advocate for the foundation of empowerment, grit and resiliency in our youth by having participants develop a strong sense of self, sisterhood and self-efficacy. This is done through learning how to navigate collaboratively with effective coping skills in various relationships. With the support of community and each other, snapp! works to foster hope and optimism while building positive change and a willingness to share an authentic self. A strengths-based philosophy and mentorship propels young women to persevere through puberty and develop a purpose, stand tall together and find inner greatness.
About This Cause
Snapp! matches high school females to 7th and 8th grade females via an application process. These ‘big sisters’ act as a mentor during the program and beyond. There are typically 12-16 females in a session. We like to run smaller groups with even numbers of ‘Bigs’ and ‘Littles’ with 10-12 sessions (fall and spring) along with additional bonding activities to allow the snapp! members to build their trust in one another like rock climbing, ropes course, and movie nights. The sessions are lead by graduate students either from CSU or UNC who are currently receiving their masters degree in counseling. The topics of each session are predetermined via input from the new snapp members and are held in a casual safe setting, are interactive, fun and impactful. Naturally, as the group grows in comfort a bond forms, and change happens. The topics range from body positivity, how to be a friend, cyber-safety, depression, sex, and identity. Snapp! focuses on connection, community and knowledge about the world around us.
