Mission Statement

The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists is a global network of more than 200 investigative journalists in 70 countries who collaborate on in-depth investigative stories. ICIJ brings together teams of journalists to work across borders to cover issues that have global significance, such as crime, corruption, and the accountability of power. ICIJ works with leading news organizations worldwide to release findings from our investigations. Its media partners range from well-known brands like The New York Times and BBC to smaller regional nonprofit investigative centers.

About This Cause

The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists creates journalism that makes better use of technology; of information from leaks, whistleblowers and public records; and the sharing economy to expose wrongdoing and give voice to underserved communities. We network journalists around the globe together to achieve results that no outlet could achieve independently; use innovative technology to collaborate securely and analyze vast quantities of data; and thereby achieve results that are immediate and durable. We disrupt power structures that rely on secrecy and opacity. Each project ICIJ delivers represents an important promise we make to the public - revealing critically important issues that would otherwise not be revealed. However, we feel it is not enough simply to produce the highest forms of investigative journalism, but also provide measurable value for every donated dollar. In November 2017, ICIJ released its latest global investigation, the Paradise Papers - a collaboration of more than 380 journalists working in 67 countries that exposed how powerful people and major corporations benefit from the offshore system. The investigation was based on a trove of 13.4 million records that leaked from two offshore services firms, based in Bermuda and Singapore, as well as from 19 corporate registries. More than 120 politicians and world leaders are named in the leak. It also revealed the offshore ties of more than a dozen Trump advisers, Cabinet members and major donors. ICIJ's unique collaborations have been honored repeatedly. In 2017, ICIJ received the Pulitzer Prize for its groundbreaking Panama Papers project, which exposed offshore companies linked to more than 140 politicians in 50 countries - including 14 current or former world leaders.
