Mission Statement
Our mission is to protect our democracy from descending into a more autocratic form of government by preventing those in power from depriving Americans of a free, fair and fully informed opportunity to exercise ultimate sovereignty.
About This Cause
Protect Democracy is a non-profit nonpartisan start-up with an urgent goal: to hold our government accountable to the laws and longstanding practices that have protected our democracy through both Democratic and Republican Administrations. Before the election, we saw an authoritarian trend in our politics that was producing rhetoric from our leaders antithetical to the Bill of Rights, the constitutional limitations on the role of the President, or the value of the laws and unwritten norms that prevent overreach and corruption. Since January 20, the current Administration’s actions have confirmed that the only limits on executive overreach will be those that are imposed by the Courts, Congress, and the American people. We have therefore assembled a team of elite attorneys, communications and campaign professionals who will use public education, investigations, strategic oversight, and litigation to defend and strengthen the checks and balances that underpin our constitutional democracy. While existing groups already focus on several areas important to this mission, such as voting rights, a free press and governmental conflicts of interest, a range of new threats to our democracy do not have sufficient resources directed at confronting them precisely because they are so unprecedented. With a strategy that involves being both proactive to the threats we know exist and reactive to new ones that may arise, this is our task.
