Mission Statement

ANIM is acknowledged as the institution which brought music back to Afghanistan and restored and ensured the musical rights of the Afghan people. During the first Taliban regime and again currently, the people of Afghanistan have been deprived of their human and musical rights, including not having access to music education, to musical recordings, being denied their rights to listen to music and any rights to learn and/or play an instrument. After the defeat of the first Taliban regime 1996-2001, ANIM was founded by Dr. Ahmad Sarmast in 2010 to reintroduce music and music education into Afghan society. ANIM innovatively uses the soft power of music in rebuilding a nation transforming lives, communities, and facilitating in the ethnic and intercultural dialogue within Afghanistan and internationally. The following objectives are the cornerstones to ANIM’s mission: --Ensure the musical rights of Afghan people --Transforming lives and communities through music education --Promoting gender equality and empowering girls --Promote musical diversity and healing of the nation through music --Community outreach and social impact --Embracing cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue Currently, ANIM hosts 300 students, with over 35% of the student body female and nearly 60% of all students are from economically disadvantaged families. Because the Taliban has retaken power in Afghanistan and re-imposed strictures on music and girls' education, ANIM carries out its mission from its home base in exile in Portugal and performs and tours all over the world.

About This Cause

The Afghanistan National Institute of Music is where talented Afghan children of all social circumstances and ethnic backgrounds receive a high quality co-educational academic education and training in Afghan traditional and Western classical music. Special focus on orphans, street-working children, and girls. The Taliban’s takeover of the country has drastically altered the security and social environment in the country. All the gains made on cultural, human and gender rights over the last two decades were lost and the nation has plunged into a mediaeval interpretation of the teachings of one of the great religions of the world. For more than a decade, the Afghanistan National Institute of Music (ANIM) has been at the forefront of promoting human rights, protecting Afghanistan’s rich cultural heritage, empowering women and girls through music, facilitating intercultural dialog, and advocating for the rights of artists and musicians which had been severely damaged during the Taliban regime of the 1990s. ANIM has been recognized around the world for its successes, including winning the Polar Music Prize in 2018, and performing on the world stage in venues that include the World Economic Forum, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the British Museum. ANIM students including the Afghan Youth Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, and the Zohra (all-girls) Orchestra have performed on countless stages in Afghanistan and around the world and have been highly active and visible on local and national TV and social media. The moral, ethical social and economic environment in which ANIM has been functioning for the last two decades no longer exists. The Taliban is not expected to support music, freedom of expression, women’s rights, ethnic diversity, intercultural dialog, or any of the values for which ANIM stands and which forms the core foundations and teachings of the institute. The highly visible nature of our work over the last decade, has now placed the lives of over 300 students, faculty, and staff at extreme and direct risk. The school and its community have always been a target since its founding and has been attacked previously. Please consider helping the community of ANIM students and faculty to survive during this horrific period and enable it to rebuild Afghan musical traditions in a safe and secure environment.
