Mission Statement

The Idaho Humane Society's mission is to advocate the welfare and responsible care of animals, protect them from neglect and cruelty, and promote humane awareness and compassion.

About This Cause

VOLUNTEERS Volunteers are an indispensable part of the many Idaho Humane Society community events and outreach programs. Volunteers staff mobile adoption units, assist with fundraising events, walk and care for animals at the shelter, and help with the day to day services we offer the community. Professional staff and local animal care experts provide volunteer training. HUMANE EDUCATION Education is a crucial component of the Idaho Humane Society’s mission to advocate for the welfare and responsible care of animals, protect them from neglect and cruelty, and promote humane awareness and compassion. We strive to share the shelter’s mission and programs as well as teach younger generations about humane care for pets and safety around animals. We offer curriculum-based programs for classrooms in order to engage students in more meaningful ways. These programs are centered on humane themes while supporting the need to meet Idaho State Standards (some of these programs include classroom pets with our Rodent Rescuer program). Each program includes supplies and a visit from an IHS staff member. We partner with Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts as well. Finally, we host numerous Spring Break and Summer Camps, as well as mini-camps throughout the year. PET FOOD PANTRY AND MEALS ON WHEELS PROGRAMS The Idaho Humane Society’s Pet Food Pantry is a safety net program, designed to provide resources primarily to struggling pet owners. The pantry supplies pet food for … *Meals on Wheels deliveries to homebound seniors *Families and individuals facing economic hardship *Shelter animals living in dedicated Idaho Humane Society foster homes *Other animal welfare groups in need of occasional pet food support FOSTER CARE While many animals are adopted shortly after they arrive at the shelter, others need extra attention before they’re ready for adoption. That is where our amazing foster parents come in. Our foster parent program is made up of community volunteers who take animals into their homes, give them care and help them find their forever homes. The shelter provides food, blankets, towels, crates and medical care for the animals. The only expense to the foster family is time and love. PET RECEIVING There are many reasons that a family can no longer care for a pet – a move, allergies, or a perceived behavioral problem. Whatever the reason, the Humane Society provides shelter and the chance for a new permanent home for these relinquished pets. Each animal’s behavior and general health are evaluated before being placed for adoption. Helpful notes about the animal’s personality are placed on each kennel card for prospective adopters. ANIMAL CONTROL Animal Control Officers’ duties include investigating cases of abuse and/or neglect, picking up stray or injured animals, handling citizen complaints, educating the public in responsible pet ownership, and enforcing animal-related ordinances and laws. Over 1,000 calls are received weekly by Animal Control Dispatch and officers are on the road seven days a week and available after hours for emergencies. ADOPTION SERVICES Finding loving and caring homes for the many animals that come through our doors each year is a primary goal of the Idaho Humane Society. The employees and volunteers work hard to match homeless animals with responsible people seeking loving animal companions. The adoption fee includes a medical exam, dental if needed, medical work if needed, initial vaccination, microchipping, and spaying or neutering of every dog and cat. LOST AND FOUND PROGRAM Our lost and found computer network helps reunite thousands of lost pets with their owners every year. All animals adopted through the shelter are microchipped. This provides a lifetime identification system for each pet. VETERINARY MEDICAL CENTER The full-service veterinary clinic is open seven days a week. Investments in both equipment and staff have resulted in a unique hospital that performs high quality medicine and surgery. The hospital directly performs more spay and neuter surgeries than any other humane society in the Pacific Northwest. Additionally, many ill or injured shelter animals that would typically be euthanized at most shelters are saved at the I.H.S. due to the hospital. STAR: Save the Animals Rescue Fund In our mission to save and protect animals, the Idaho Humane Society provides compassionate care to as many cats and dogs as we can. The STAR fund provides urgent veterinary care for the companion animals of families, seniors and individuals in the community who otherwise aren’t able to afford these services. SPOT: Stop Pet Overpopulation Today An important part of fulfilling our mission at the Idaho Humane Society is accomplished through our vigorous spay and neuter programs. That is why every dog, cat, and rabbit adopted from the Idaho Humane Society shelter is spayed or neutered before leaving for a new home. Our Veterinary Medical Center also provides high-quality, affordable spay and neuter surgeries for public animals. Through the SPOT (Stop Pet Overpopulation Today) program, our medical center performs nearly 10,000 spay and neuter surgeries each year. STATEWIDE OUTREACH As the largest animal welfare organization in the area, we frequently provide assistance in emergencies and disasters regionally. We have the ability to transfer in dogs and cats to help. Additionally, we provide consultation services for shelters in our area. LEGISLATION Idaho Humane Society is actively involved in drafting and lobbying for legislation at the state and local level that promotes the welfare of animals.
